    N91 solenoid replacement help

    Hey guys,

Long time reader first time poster. I have a 2001 A4 B5 1.8T with the tip transmission. Recently it had begun down shifting pretty hard and also began shifting hard into Drive and Reverse from Park and Neutral.

The other day I started it up and ever time I shifted into gear the engine bogged down and shut off. I was able to work it back and forth between gears and finally get it to run in gear and get home.

From all my reading this sounds like like a N91 solenoid failure. I scanned with VCDS and came back with nothing but from what I understand a failure of this kind may not show on a scan if its mechanical.

I when ahead are changed of the transfluid and filter but that didn't help.

    My questions are:
    1. Do you guys agree this sounds like n91 solenoid failure?
    2. Where is this solenoid located on the vavle body(pics/diagrams are greatly appreciated).
    3. Does anyone that has completed this job have tips?

The transmission is the ZF-5HP19 model 1060-040054.

    Thanks in advance!

Go to the junkyard and get a used trans, swap it in, problem solved for less then the cost of the valve.

It could be the valve failing, or the trans could be failing in other ways. Unless you have done major work on cars before messing with the valve body is generally not something you want to do yourself. If you feel comfortable doing it, then it's pretty straight forward. There are a few guides to it here and there.

If you don't want to swap in a used tranny, then your best bet would be to remove the tranny and send it to a trusted trans rebuild shop. They will do the job right and they should provide a warranty.

The only true option you have if you love the car and love driving is a 5 speed swap, but not really, the TIP is an okay trans as far as things goes.
