Anyone have stock parts I can borrow to pass Smog?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I'm in san diego and just pick dup a stage 3 b5 s4. Ive failed smog at a couple different stations for the aftermarket parts. Does anyone have the stock engine covers and maybe a stock intake I could buy/borrow for a couple hours to pass a smog check? Registration expires next month so I'm in a pretty tight place. If anyone can help in any way I would appreciate it. My number is 845-235-1021. Thanks.

I'm not in Cali and don't have parts to offer, but is it just a visual inspection to pass out there? I'm relocating to the San Fran Bay Area in 8 months for work and have a stage 3 without cats, 02's and EGTs coded out. just want to know what I'm getting myself into when I go that way

no. Cali is probably the worst state as far as emissions go. I would assume SF would be one of the most strict areas in Cali. you will either need to pay off a smog station (if you can find one), or put your stock intake and exhaust back on. good luck otherwise.

Odd, I recently passed with my stage 3 with the 034 Motorsport kit with no engine covers. Had the stock airbox though. And I live in CA.

Is the smog inspection in CA more than just an OBD II hookup?

place i take it to is OBD2 hookup. CEL is auto fail, but they make you pay for the full test anyways. they also visually inspect intake system and catalytic converters. along with doing a sniffer test to measure pollutants and an EVAP test.

I just went through this. You need to pass visual and most places really only check stock intake and that you have cats of some sort. Also readiness is important. O2 and Evaporate and all the other shit needs to pass or fail. It wasn't easy but got mine to pass. Good luck. Find someone parting out a stock car and grab the intake. That makes them less likely to snoop around further.

I've got the stock intake on hand still. it's annoying AF to reinstall the OEM exhaust just to pass, but it is what it is. does Johnny law also do visual inspections and ticket if they feel like it for whatever reason?

How far would you be willing to drive? I can ask my smog guy he might say no due to past fails.

Not that i go illegal smog as my cars have all emissions.

I also don't agree with people that use this method....

find a local enthusiast meet, even hondas if you're desperate. youre bound to meet someone that will know someone that will help your car pass. obviously theyll charge more than a regular smog check, but worth it compared to swapping on and off cats.

but dont do that because thats illegal, and stuff.

I would drive up to la I hear it's easier up there for whatever reason. It didn't fail because lack of engine covers I just figured stock covers and stock intake would make the bay look oem. My exhaust is catted after the down pipes and it passes everything else it's just that dam visual.

Yeah needs OEM cats and they must be in the exact location as stock. Anywhere that air passes between the intake to the cats must be stock to pass :/

Yup, that's a little less than what I paid. The whole visual part of the test is what's bullshit about California emissions, like why do you care if something doesn't look original if the car passes emissions? Granted, there are tons of places that will look the other way on the visual aspect as long as your car passes.

I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT go have your car emissions tested through normal places if you have any doubt it'll pass. Once your car is flagged in the system for failing, you'll have a very hard time going forward.
