Nice car but I never understood why people like station wagons so much.

I think the key phrase is station wagons. Historically American wagons have been promoted viewed and used as family wagons ala National Lampoon's Vacation whereas in EU and other parts of the world, utility is viewed as a good thing, especially when it's done tastefully (IE NO wood paneling lol).

Plus, you have to admit, it's fun to see a wagon on the track blowing away Bimmers and such lol.

And to add that an equivalent 5 seater SUV like the Q5 have very few advantages plus a host of disadvantages when compared to an Avant. Higher viewing position + ability to travel through higher snow drifts + marginally more internal space compared to being heavier, thirstier, having higher CG , poorer CD, and not handling as well.

I just returned from a business trip in Europe. I would say that about 30% of the cars are wagons.

Given VW's current focus on its diesel and resulting financial problems, I don't see them spending the money to adapt an EU S series Avant to meet US standards.
Very limited options in the US. I believe only MB offers a sport wagon.
