18047-Accelerator Pedal Pos. Sensor 1/2 (G79/G185): Implausible Signal? ONLY IN RAIN?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    the car: 2005.5 B7S4 6-SPEED

I keep getting this code with VagCom after/during heavy rain:

DTC: 18047 - Accelerator Pedal Pos. Sensor 1/2 (G79/G185): Implausible Signal?

Pulled ECU out, box was dry, blew out connectors anyway, pulled apart and blew out the connectors under the ECU, no apparent evidence of any moisture.

Same Code followed with ESP and EPC lights (and the dreaded limp mode grrrr)

Eventually would go away after restarting the car a few times after sitting

    1. Replaced pedal assembly with brand new unit.... problem returned

    2. Replaced throttle body... problem returned (connector was clean and dry too)

    3. received an error for both rear O2 sensors out of the blue, I disconnected both sensors (after having other cars where DBW and O2s could cause issues and effect eachother when there were wiring issues, so figured it was worth a shot)... problem returned

Living in a rainy climate this is a problem LOL. It only seems to do it when there is heavy rain. It MAY be pure coincidence but seems related. What should I do next oh wise B6/B7 Gurus? My brain hurts and I am feeling defeated after battling this for the past 2 months. Not to mention I couldn't overtake a Chevy Spark on the freeway tonight while in limp mode, and that just isn't ok LOL

Thank you for the reply, can you help me narrow down my hunt by telling me which connector or even which pin you had problems with?

Here is my thread detailing similar issues. The exact same, I believe. My car is JHM tuned. Is yours?

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-Throttle-body

I've had minor successes by cleaning the throttle body, and cleaning the wiring harness at the throttle body, but the issue came back after weeks or months. Reconnecting the wiring harness on the throttle body always clears the error lights and removes the limp mode.

Most recently I had my local indy take a look at the wiring between the ECU and the throttle body. One wire had a slightly high resistance but nothing that should cause a fault. My ECU box/area was clean as a whistle and showed no signs of moisture either. Interestingly, since they did this over a month ago (removing ECU, checking connections, reconnecting everything), the issue has not come back. Fingers crossed it was just a loose connection somewhere around the ECU and it won't come back.

Sorry to revive an old thread but my daughter had a similar issue with an 04 A4 3.0 that generated a CEL EPC and went into limp mode about a month ago after a rainstorm. After stopping and restarting the car it ran normal. Codes pulled were for P2138 Accelerator Position Sensor (G79/G185). I performed a TBA with Vagcom and the car has performed uneventfully until today. Same scenario, car was exposed to heavy rain overnight, and this afternoon my daughter reported the CEL EPC lights came on and the Tiptronic transmission wouldn't shift into 3rd and 4th gear and she had to shift it manually. She said it wouldn't make it past 45 mph (limp mode?) I used Vagcom to check codes and none were pending so I had to run a full scan and came up with:

    18047 - Accelerator Position Sensor 1/2 (G79/G185)
    P1639 - 008 Implausible Signal Intermittent
01314 Engine Control Module 79-10 Intermittent

I took it for a test drive this afternoon, ran it hard and it performed normally, shifted as designed, no CEL.

Both the ECM & TCM are JHM tuned (mailed in). Also running the JHM catless downpipes.

Just curious to find out how if your vehicle has been running fine since your last post.

    I'll try the following tomorrow:

    Remove & clean MAF
    Disconnect & clean TB
    TBA with Vagcom
Remove ECM and TCM, clean connectors, reinstall

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks~Mark

Vehicle ran fine for months until I swapped the downpipes and it has returned as an intermittent issue. So I never really have been able to get to the bottom of it.

I had the same problem before and it gets worst when it's damp outside. The problem is that the throttle body connector is not fully plugged or connected even though you make hear a click. Use zip ties and force the connectors more in by using one of coolant lines as leverage. Then wrap some tape around the connector to vapor proofing. This solved my problems and it's been a year now and no problem

Thanks to both of you. So far I was able to disconnect battery, remove the ECM, disconnect ECM, spray the shit out of the pins/tabs with cleaner, reassemble (I didn't mess with the TCM), removed and sprayed the shit out of the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner, reinstalled. I'm not familiar with the TB on the 3.0 and will need to do a little research before tackling that this evening. Kevin, what did you use to clean the contacts for the TB connector? Did you use any die-electric grease when reconnecting the TB?
I appreciate the recommendation for zip ties and tape.

I just used regular electrical clean spray and foil tape around the exposed wires. Yes de electrical would work too but I'm too cheap for that. Zip tie is my best friend

I found info for the 1.8 and 2.0 but not much for the 3.0 throttle body. I can see the throttle body on the firewall side of the engine behind the intake manifold but it looks like a real PITA to remove and clean and I'm not sure it would be worth it. As far as a wire connector, it appears there is a connector on a plate that sits on top of the TB, along with some vacume hoses. Appears to be just two wires feeding the connector. Is this the connector that you are removing, cleaning and zip tying? Or perhaps do you have a 1.8 or 2.0 which is a slightly different animal?

In any case, reconnected everything, ran the TB adaptation a couple times and then did a full scan:

Good news is the Accelerator Position Sensor code cleared up. We will see how long that stays cleared.

Update. Heavy rain overnight here and today the same codes for Accelerator Position Sensor 1/2 (G79/G185) returned when my daughter drove the car home today in limp mode on side streets. Not sure what to try next. The Ross suggestions for this code mentions the code could be triggered by O2 sensors and associated wiring, however, I am not seeing any codes for O2 sensors. I believe the JHM catless downpipes still have O2 sensors connected to them so perhaps I'll need to go over their wiring and connections?

I performed a few Throttle Body Adaptations with Vagcom this afternoon, took it for a test drive and it threw a CEL, EPC and went into limp mode within the first block.

Well, tomorrow I'll try the following:

    1. Check O2 sensor connections and wiring.
    2. Remove the ECU and take a deeper dive into the ECU housing and wiring connections at the bottom of the ECU plenum to see if there has been any water infiltration
    3. Try to figure out how to use Vagcom to determine if the accelerator pedal sensors are faulty

    Any other suggestions?

I'll try posting my most recent log later this evening. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Interesting, this is one of the codes that’s popping up with my RS4

Refer to my thread here: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-highway-TWICE

It’s not when it’s wet but rather that code comes up with 2 others and my car quits with no start. Turns over but not ignition...

Water is getting into your ECU box at the back under the wiper and dripping on the white connector, or water has been in there previously and the pins are corroded.
