B6 1.8T Quattro Manual Tans. Shut off on highway, wont start

I have checked many forums and none really give me an idea of whats going on with my car. I was driving on the highway and suddenly the engine silently dropped to 0 RPM and I had to merge onto the side of the road. Tried to start it and would barely turnover, although i know my battery is usually pretty weak in the winter. Towed it home, boosted the battery, and it turned over almost as fast as normal but shudders and coughs like it wants to start. Im not reading any new codes (besides a few O2 and air pump codes i had before), all cylinders have spark, fuel pressure, and my timing belt seems to be fine. Fuses and relays are all fine by the looks of them and all the interior accessories and radio work. Im not sure what else to check in order to get this thing working again. I love the quattro and want it back to play in the snow.

Have someone crank it while you watch all the pulleys. You may have one that is seized which would restrict the belt enough to prevent it from starting. I'd check the alternator pulley first because of how it shut off on you while driving as well as previous battery issues

i had done that but all of them seemed to spin freely. i had a feeling it was the alternator but ill go home and take a closer look at it while cranking. thanks for your input

No problem did you end up finding the problem? I'm curious to see what it was.

Wow the worst possible thing that could have happened. ended up dropping a valve, we got to swap the engine. probably for the best tho cause it was pushing 310000km.
