Dropped door - missing hinge pin

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Firstly I apologise if this is not in the correct area to post.

Secondly, I have searched and searched pretty much all audi forums and although I have come across similar threads, none of which have been able to help with my issue.

The other day I noticed that my passenger door on my 2003 Audi A4 (B6) was not closing properly unless it was slammed shut. On further inspection it seems that there is a threaded pin missing on the top hinge as shown on the attached. I checked the drivers side and can see that there is one here.

Any ideas what this threaded bolt/pin is and where I can get a replacement?

Any help with this matter would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Gary

I believe you are describing the retaining screw for the upper hinge. It doesn't affect the alignment. Its purpose is to hold the door pin in place. If you want to remove the door you have to first remove that retaining screw so you can take the door off of the hinge. Unless you also loosen the bottom hinge retainer the door isn't going anywhere without that retaining screw.

If your door is aligned properly but is just closes too tight you can fix that by adjusting the door striker mounted on the car body. If you look closely at the striker you will see small alignment marks that can be used to adjust the striker in/out and up/down as required. Just loosen the two 8mm triple square bolts and adjust as needed.

Up/down and in/out adjustments are made by loosening the hinge to door nuts/bolts and moving the door as necessary.

Forward/backward adjustments are made by loosening the hinge to body bolts and moving the door as necessary.

Once the door is properly aligned the door striker can be adjusted up/down in/out to provide a positive engagement with the locking mechanism on the door.

That is a missing retaining screw. It holds the door pin in place but it should not change the alignment. Remove the one from the other side and find any bolt with the same thread.

Hi, I appreciate the reply, however the door striker is fine and hasn't moved at all. The problem is when I open the passenger door it drops slightly and therefore when I attempt to close it, I almost have to lift the door to close it or simply slam it hard. The only difference I can see is that the passenger side is missing the 'retaining screw'.

It could be that your door pin is worn out and creating a lot of slop. As mentioned earlier just remove the one from the other side and find a bolt that matches the thread size and put it in.

Looking closely at your picture it appears to me that the bolt that holds the hinge to the car body has shifted and may be loose. You can see marks on the body where the hinge plate was mounted higher at one point. You can also see rust from where the bolt/plate has moved.

I'm pretty sure it is this that is affecting my door dropping. I did think that would be the only option. Thanks

Looking closer at your two hinges you have a serious alignment problem way beyond missing the retaining screw. Check all of you hinge mountings. I suspect several are loose.
