    Homelink is TERRIBLE!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anybody else have issues with their Homelink and it being absolute crap. The range on mine is terrible and I basically have to pull right up to the front of my door facing forward. (Which is an inconvenience as I always back in). It's not the opener as my wife can open the garage from down the street with the remote that came with the unit.

    Any fixes?

i haven't had any problems with mine. as with most car garage door opener modules, it is directional

in fact just last night when headed home i got a new record for distance, probably a good 100 yards down the street through a window in the side of our garage

No issues here on any of my cars '06,'08,'14.'16. I haven't done a distance test, but I routinely open my doors before I enter my driveway. Have you tried different combinations of pressing vs holding the button?

mine is intermittently bad/good. i live in an apt complex - sometimes i can be half way down the block and get it to open, other times my bumper is practically at the door with me repeated pressing the button before the door starts to move. fwiw, the homelink transmitter is mounted in the front grill of the car. when i swapped in an RSQ5 grill, the body shopped had to remove and reinstall the transmitter.

I seem to be the only one. I'll double check the actual unit. (Liftmaster 8500) Maybe there is an adjustment that could be done. Just seems weird as the remotes that come with the unit work great.

    Thanks everyone for chiming in.

At least it works in the SQ5. I also have a Lexus RC F, same model year, and Lexus could not get the homelink to work with the same garage door that the Audi can open.

I haven't had any issues with mine. Driveway is about 120 ft to the corner of the house and it works as I approach the driveway.

Maybe try a different channel on the unit and reprogram?

No persistent issues with my homelink either; however, I can recall at least two occasions when I did need to pull up close to the door for it to work.

It may be the antena on your opener. I pulled the wire out and coiled it around a pencil. Then removed the pencil and let the small coil dangle from the opener. I can open the door from over 100' away.

I have heard of others having this problem, but both of mine worked fine. I back into the driveway and I press the opener from the street, facing away from the door, at around 80 feet. I have gotten in the habit of holding it for 2 seconds, otherwise it doesn't always work. This was going to be my suggestion...always hold it for 2 seconds. For those having trouble, it could also be caused by other interference in your neighborhood. Not the sort of interference that could open your door, but enough to confuse the signal.

This homelink setup is much better than the one on my M3. Try adjusting the antenna on the garage door opener itself.

Turbojayc, any luck? I've had this same issue with same opener since I got my SQ over 2 years ago. I tried reprogramming many times and it fails periodically to open at all. There's a point 50' down the drive as I round a bend that I have to hit or I risk no response at all. I bought the "my Q" (aptly named isn't it) adapter from Chambelain for the opener itself and use my iPhone from a km away instead. Other cool features too, but I'd love to just fix the problem. Wife's car doesn't seem to struggle...

Mine was horrible for years, I recently pulled the top cover off the radiator/bumper to get to my headlights and found the homelink unit had fallen out of its center mounting clips and was just laying there. When I put everything back together it worked much better, no distance problems now.

Same shit. No improvement, I'm just dealing with it. Sorry, I'm not much help. I find keeping the button pressed in a few extra seconds has helped.

This is always true for rolling-code openers, which are pretty much all of them made in the last decade.
Both of mine have worked perfectly, backing in from about 80 feet away, as long as I press it for 2 seconds.

Not sure if this adds any value, but it was a bit of a challenge programming the opener in my new '16 SQ5. Three attempts. I did everything exactly as prompted each time. Third attempt worked like a charm. I've heard others (not just Audi...although Homelink is the constant) report the same. Weird. Nonetheless, once programmed, it works just as well as it did in my '13. Feather pressure for a nanosecond on the button, and bada boom, the garage door opens.

Works fine on our '15 SQ5, but not on our '15 Lexus. Go figure.

this was a while ago. i simply called homelink and told them the issue. they said yes, this is a common issue/complaint.

no cost at the time, they just send me a new module that replaced the old unit in the header liner.

i guess it was no cost as the unit is useless if you don't already have the module in your car

I remember this thread. Perhaps you guys are getting some interference. Probably not what you want to hear, but all three of ours work just fine from in front of the neighbor's houses, about 100 feet away. I back in too, and it works, facing away from the house in the middle of the street.

That was what I had to do with the Lexus. I traded it - the infotainment system trackpad was unusable and the seat heaters were crap. The "Relentless Pursuit of Perfection". LMFAO
