How Do I Put My S7 Into Transmission and Suspension Sport Mode At Same Time?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am coming up on my second month of driving a new 2016 S7 and I still can't get the grin off my face. Plus I seem to learn something new every day and can use some advice from more experienced drivers.

When i pull back on the shift lever, the car goes into "S" (sport mode). This seems to be the same thing as putting the car in dynamic "Engine/Transmission" mode via Individual settings. This now puts the car in a more aggressive powertrain mode.

BUT I would like the suspension to also get more aggressive when the car is put into "S mode."

Question: When you put the car into sport mode (via shift lever), how do you automatically get the suspension into dynamic?

Reason: Every time I have a clear shot at a freeway on-ramp and I drop the transmission into "S" sport mode, I find the suspension does not stiffen fast enough (even in auto mode- via individual setting). About half way through the on-ramp I feel the suspension getting stiffer but by that time I am almost onto the freeway. By the time I adjust the "Car" to the Dynamic Suspension mode (via MMI) I am either in another lane or I am through the on-ramp.

If by simply putting the car in "S" mode (via shift lever) it would go to dynamic suspension as well, I would not be dependent on "auto" suspension AND I could prep the car a few seconds before entering the on ramp.

Thanks in advance for your experience.

The only way you can adjust the suspension is via the drive select in MMI. The suspension does also automatically lower at certain speeds to its dynamic setting.

The shifter is for the transmission and thusly why it only changes the transmission when you select S.

Also, Auto doesn't actually mean Auto. None of the settings "adjust," its more of a in between Comfort and Dynamic. Some settings are set to comfort, some are set to Dynamic some are somewhere in between. I believe its in the manual. If you're feeling the suspensions get stiff this is due to the car doing it at certain speeds not due to Auto setting.

    VERY INTERESTING!!

Thanks for the input. For some reason I thought Auto reacted to driving conditions.

Dave - I wish the car did the same thing you want - similar to the M button on BMWs. See pages 101-103 of the online manual for the descriptions of each mode. http://ownersmanual.audiusa.com/#

Thanks Bruce. I read a copy of the manual before I got the car. And now that I can actually "push the buttons" it makes more sense.

Still surprised that "Auto" is really "a mid point" between Dynamic and Comfort and not automatic control.

And I still continue to learn something new about this car every day!!

I wish auto was a mid control like the BMW, but my experience is that it changes between comfort and dynamic, when certain situations are met. What could auto mean otherwise. Surely it would be called something like normal or sport, if it was a middle mode.

This brings up a REALLY good point- WHAT THE HELL IS AUTO?

There is no definitive explanation in the manual and I have been unable to track down anything useful on the web.

    Anyone have an idea?

I don't know what they all are, but I wish they were settable.

Auto engine/transmission - Sportier after repeated heavy throttle usage
Auto air suspension - Lowers above a certain speed.
Auto steering - Stiffens/heavier above a certain speed.
Auto engine sound - Valves open at high throttle/revs.

Thanks for the explanations. I would be curious what the parameters and limits are for each variable. Would VAG-COM provide any answers?

Looks like we have come "full circle."

Although it's NOT possible to activate Dynamic Suspension automatically when you pull back on the gear shift to put the car into "Sport", what is the next best way to accomplish the same thing? It looks like "Auto."

So that begs the question- what is "Auto?"

I get Auto is balanced, agile and standard (in the chart above). So what does that mean?

MAC (MadAboutCars) has provided the best answer above:
Auto engine/transmission - Sportier after repeated heavy throttle usage
Auto air suspension - Lowers above a certain speed.
Auto steering - Stiffens/heavier above a certain speed.
Auto engine sound - Valves open at high throttle/revs.

Can anyone else add to this?

    Thanks.

I've tried driving my my16 S6 on winding open roads with air suspension set to auto and it's not good (compared to being set to dynamic). Way too much body roll, even with tire pressures set to 46 front and 44 rear.

I also wish there was a way to select dynamic mode easily. It should have been an option for the '*' button on the steering wheel.

    Couldn't agree more!
When you want to go Dynamic, you should be able to go "ALL" Dynamic and do it very easily.

FWIW valves are open in 8 cylinder mode and closed in 4 cylinder mode. The pumped in sound through the speakers is more pronounced in dynamic, soft or almost non-existent in comfort, and in-the-middle in auto.

Agree with the 8/4 cylinder mode, but my understanding is that the S6 has no engine sound through the speakers. It may however come from another device attached to the base of the windscreen and under the seat.

My bad. You are right the sound actuator is at the base of the windscreen I keep forgetting this is different from the B8.

I think that the sound actuator is only on the TDI models of the A6/A7. It was my understanding these are not implemented on the regular V6 and V8TT of the S models.
