    Looking for model choice advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking for some input on which model to look for for my daughter. We had a nice '74 Super Beetle but decided she would like more creature comforts. Currently working on a '90 G60 Corrado, its a little too touchy for her. She wants a '93 VR6 Corrado..... I've always been partial to Audi's. I had an '06 A4 2.8T and loved it. Currently thinking of an Allroad for the wife and I but would love to show my daughter some choices.
    Thanks

allroads are great cars as long as you swap out the airbags with struts

So would I! Not in our budget for new. Don't mind some work and maintenance, while only 16, she did most of the motor rebuild on our bug. Just looking to avoid the time bombs. The G60 electrical was totally cobbled by POs. And with the declining availability of parts and my "I'm just getting too old for this major of project" additude I would like to offer an Audi alternative.

They are becoming my first choice (for me). I need a little extra room for my wife's wheelchair. But a little performance doesn't suck either!

I have two allroads. One is still on original suspension and components at 135k, the other had a leaky spring at 150k. Both have had compressor piston rings replaced (1 hour, $20 venture). Some issues arise with the suspension but if they do they are absolutely a one-time fix. Unless you keep the car beyond 10 years, at that point you got your money's worth though :)

The allroad is tons of fun all around. Nice grunt, quiet and smooth and has all sorts of creature comforts like heated steering wheel and all four outboard seats, front passenger & driver seat memory, solar sunroof (not as important for keeping interior cool in the summer but very useful in the winter when it keeps circulating hot air with the car off for up to 30 minutes!) parking sensors, power steering column (4.2 only) and RNS-E navigation (though hard to find, only came on real late 05s, can be retrofitted with bluetooth)

I guarantee you would enjoy driving one. Really endearing car. A good idea to buy one with lots of maintenance and keep up on maintenance yourself.

Try to avoid automatic c5's if at all possible. That leaves you with a 6 speed a6 or a 6 speed Allroad. As long as not driven like a hooligan, one of those will last you a long time. Just be prepared to do the valve cover gaskets and cam cap seals several times.

My last Allroad I swapped to standard a6 suspension and ended up making money on the process. Used Allroad air suspension bits are worth more than their a6 counterparts becuase there are some people out there crazy enough to want to keep the ever problematic air ride.

The only downside to buying an Allroad is the stigma that attaches to you. Allroaders are a strange people, often known to wear wool socks with sandals and eat kale. Yes..... Kale. If this sounds like you, consider an Allroad.

As for your daughter, pick her up either a b5 or b6 a4 with a 1.8t, Quattro, and a manual transmission. Cheap cars, easy to work on, and can last 200+ thousand miles easily. And most importantly, safe. Always buy your loved ones a vehicle you'd trust them getting in a serious accident with.

Oh and since your daughter sounds like she likes to work on cars, the 1.8t is highly tunable, and the b5/b6 a4's are the cheapest audis to modify, you know, should she get bit my the damn mod bug.

B5 A4 for sure! Perfect for a loved one and so damn affordable compared to the C5 A6

I want to argue with this but I can't. Kale is yummy and I have some getting ready to plant in the garden once the weather gets nicer. I also love the air ride on my allroad and will likely keep it for as long as I own the car.

Kale is TERRIBLE and the suspension on my 03 has given me zero problems and is factory original. I did change the piston ring as preventative maintenance at 100k.

I do not subscribe to that club.

    Kale is yummy!

Also, my air suspension has been decent. I've replaced both front bags and rebuilt the compressor but the rear bags are still original. I'm at 215k miles.

Thanks again for all the input. It seems the 1.8T is the best engine choice?

    2.8 lasts forever
1.8t and 2.7t good for mods and fairly easy to work on
    4.2 belt
    4.2 Chain

My next Audi may not even be an Audi but will probably be the 1.8t or 2.7t, currently working out a trade deal for a 1.8t Passat myself.

An example of a great (rare color) car for a good (fzckn ridiculous) price.
    B5 A4's are the isht, especially 1.8T 98-99.5's [i think].
I plan on getting another one... or two... or three very soon.
