    If not rain-x, then what?

I'm starting to get paranoid in using rain-x washer fluid because of the recent string of recent threads regarding failing sensors in the washer tank. So what do you guys suggest be used instead that won't cause this issue? I've been using rain-x washer fluid for 4 years in my B7 and did for over a year in my previous '06 C6 with no issues.

I, too have heard a lot of chatter of late regarding this. Being in the desert where we get all of 4 inches of rain per year, I am unfamiliar with what the benefit of adding Rain_X is. I was under the impression that Rain-X was something you applied directly to the windsheild to help bead off water in an effort to help keep the windshield clear for better visability in the rain. Am I wrong in this?

    Chris,

You're are correct. Rain-x originally was the substance you would apply onto your windshield. But since then, they started producing washer fluid with the stuff in it. It's usually on sale for a good price and it combines an ice melting substance and bug removal substance in one on top of the aforementioned benefit. My question was what else could we use that wouldn't mess with the sensor in the washer fluid tank.

I use 3 parts distilled water, 1 part windex. Or if we have normal washer fluid lying around I use that. After using rainx and having it clog a washer nozzle, won't use it again. Too many additives.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Why be concerned now if after 4 years your sensor is still goin' strong!?

What about just applying rainx directly to the windshield and using regular wiper fluid?

I don't necessarily buy the rain x fluid because of the rain x. Its just that it goes on sale a lot and I've had no issues with it on the past, but as I've seen an uptick in posts regarding damages it might have caused, I'm looking for other effective options.

theres a product called Aquapel that I highly recommend guys. its a treatment that you apply directly to a clean (search youtube for application videos) windshield and it repels water very well. you'll be using less washer fluid in the end. can also apply it to door/back glasses, will really increase visibility. amazon usually has it for a good price.

I was one of those that has suffered from the rain-x. I still haven't changed my sensor, but now I just use the blue washer fluid.

Rain-X makes a windshield wiper with the stuff built in so every time your wipers make a pass over the windscreen you're applying the Rain-X. Buy the wipers, and apply the Rain-X spray manually to the windshield and use regular washer fluid. OR!!!... cut a potato in half and wipe the open end all over the glass, wipe clean and BETTER than Rain-X! not kidding!

I have personally used GTechniq G1 Clear Vision Smart Glass with success. At highways speeds, you don't even need your wipers. One application last a couple years. I put 2 coats on my windshield and 1 each on my other windows. This was on my Avant and I will do it again on my Sedan soon.
