B8.5 Weird noise coming from DSG trans?

So, last week my car started making a new noise. It seems to be coming from the trans, but tends to happen while it is in gear, not on up/down shifts, and it affects D, S and M modes, and doesn't seem to matter what gear you are in, or if you are decelerating, accelerating or just coasting.

Its tough to describe, but it sounds like a "CHHH" really quickly (maybe about a half a second), almost sounds like if you scrape your front lip ever so slightly, or an ice maker dropping a single ice cube into the tray. I've had my hand on the shift knob when the noise has occurred, and you can feel it through the shifter...

I am planning on making a svc appointment, but figured I'd see if anyone here has insight. The car is a 2015 w/ 29K on it..and I have never noticed this sound before last week.

Have a listen to the clip I posted below, its not the greatest quality, but the noise in question is in the last 5 seconds or so of the clip. This was with the windows closed, seems louder with the windows open, but for the sake of recording I had them closed.

Help/ideas are appreciated. Hoping its not serious...

Good thing is that you should be covered under full warranty. Couldn't listen to the clip at the moment, but hope it all gets resolved.

Okay, so on my ride home from work this evening, I was able to get a quick, sloppy video of the noise, a bit better than the sound clip above. Seems 90% of the time I can replicate it by pulling the shifter back to S while rolling in D (seems like its mostly on downshifts, but it is not exclusive to downshifts)..

I will have to try and get a better one in the morning. It happens a fraction of a second after I shift to S. The more I think about it, the more it reminds me of a bad synchro in a manual trans, that split second chatter between gears.

I can hear what you are talking about, but no idea what it is. You may wanna go for a drive with the shop foreman, so he knows exactly what you are talking about, otherwise they'll just say they couldn't hear it.

I have the same issue and sound . It happened in 3rd gear at 1800 Rpms in D mode and 2800 rpms in S mode . It won't do it in M tho. I took it today to get it serviced and as well to see what it is . The technician rode with me so I could duplicated the "chhh" noise and he even said its the first he's heard about this . My b8.5 is there over night and probably over the weekend . :/ He thinks it's the clutch plates ( that's what he said ) . I'll keep u updated with the results .

I barely heard it but it was there. Definitely take the service person with you, not just the advisor but the actual tech. I had to do that with a door rattle I was having because they could not seem to fix it.

Interesting that lots of these cars are getting DSG issues from 40-50k. Another thread seemed to point this problem only to MY10-12, but looks like that's not the case...

In the DSG issues poll thread, there were 15 or so people with B8.5's that voted they had problems, but nobody really spoke up.

I only have <30k on my car, was planning on keeping it for a long time too..

Yes, something to monitor for sure. I'm itching to get back in an S4...had a 6MT before and considering DSG for long-term ownership, but now it's looking more like I'll go back to 6MT.

sounds like normal operation to me, my GTI with dsg has it's fair share of clunks but there were never any issues with the actual driveablility of the car

you'll notice it also when you're driving and drop from 5th gear to a full stop

I am positive that this noise/clunk is not normal. I'm used to the DSG after driving with it for 30k. This has not happened a single time since I took ownership, until last weekend. The first time it happened, my S.O. noticed it as a passenger, and she asked what it was, I thought it was some road debris that got kicked up, but sure enough, it continued happening. But I will say that driveability has not been affected thus far.

I have an appointment at Audi bright and early Tuesday AM, so we will see what happens.

Curious to see how the other member having the same issue makes out as well..

No not yet . I haven't called either maybe I'll give them a call later . For mean while I'm stuck with a Q5 as a loaner

Just got a call from my SA, who just had gotten off the phone with AOA. They will be replacing my entire transmission with a new, factory sealed unit. Seems like they mulled over repairing it, and AOA felt it would be a better course of action just to remove/replace the entire thing. Was not expecting this news, but boy am I glad it is figured out now.

Don't know if I am just the lucky one with a bad trans? But having serious questions about the longevity of the car now, despite there being so "few" problems with this platform. She's still a baby too :/

I. Also got off the phone with my service advisor out of Audi of Oakland. He has said the exactly same thing and they are replacing my transmission.

Probably just a faulty transmission from the factory. I wouldn't read too much into it. Glad they are taking care of it.

Shower thought for the day, I paid for audi care for the sole purpose of covering the 35k service, mainly the DSG service. Now at 30k, I will a brand new transmission...
I wonder if I have an argument there, maybe they could give me a coupon for the DSG service down the road? Thinking about bringing it up.

Be thankful they gave you a whole band new tranny, without any hassle. Yes you could ask for dsg fluid change for later, but do not count on it

Sounds like it .. But for me it was just in 3rd gear @ 2800rpm .

FWIW, I just cracked 100,000km's on my '12 S4, and it is not clunking like this. Definitely not normal, though it sounds like it could be driveline slack? I picked the car up a 72,000km and right away installed the the Apikol rear diff insert (lower) & the 034 trans mount insert, I noticed both of those made the car much smoother. I wonder if adding those would help? Otherwise, it reads like it's the dreaded death-clunk, which was supposed to be fixed for '12s and B8.5s...

edit: clarified this is the older, lower rear diff mount insert. I also have the new upper diff-mount inserts on order.

So here's the overall report . Went in for a 45K service and came back with a new tranny , motor mount and a down pipe.

^ I'm curious as to the range of vin's they were talking about for the trans. You should be good for a while after all of that. How's she running now?

She running great but then again she had always ran great . It was just the like "Che" noise in 3 rd gear . Didn't really bother me but I knew it wasn't normal. The motor mount tho .... I just thought she idol rough cause of the v6 now she's nice and steady . I'm going back next next because I have a vibration noisy coming from the drivers side . It turns out that the heat shield got bent then replacing the motor mount . ( sounds like an exhaust leak ) they've treated me good so I'm sure they will take care of it .

Im sorry, just saw this post. My car was at the dealer for 5 business days total (picked it up on the 5th). I got a glimpse of the actual bill , not the zeroed out one, was around 12k plus...

I will post my report on monday perhaps, im away for the weekend, but they described a similar situation, they pulled the pan and the oil was contaminated and they found metal pieces in it. Some sort of internal failure, happy that I was taken care of as well.

They have done good by me, i hope this trans lasts, i was planning on keeping this car forever..
