Nice Places to Live Near Silver Spring

So my daughter is starting a new nursing job at Holy Cross Hospital and is looking for an apartment or town house to rent in the area. Anyone have any recommendations on a nice area that we should be looking?

Depends on budget and how far she is willing to drive (5-15 minutes). Downtown Silver Spring has a lot of nice apartments and its close to food/bars/etc. Its just a short drive from DTSS to Holy Cross.

Kensington is a good area, again pretty close to Holy Cross. Wheaton is suspect so I don't know if you want your daughter living there.

@Cgoon just bought a house close to HC and did a lot of research so I'm sure he will chime in for Town House Rentals.

A bunch of new apartments have sprout up near the Silver Spring Metro. Very yuppie crowd. Search for Portico, Citron, Cameron, Solaire, Veridian. They are all pricey doe. The older buildings are cheaper, but with less amenities. Lenox Park used to be the best before the new ones got built, so there may be value there. I used to live in a condo not too far away from downtown. The people/community were really nice and had a lot of owners who would rent out to folks just starting out. PM me if you want more info.

I used to live in some apartments off Briggs Chaney, right near where Audi SS is. They were nice at the time and it wasnt a bad drive down 29 to SS or Holy Cross. However, that was years ago, I have no idea how the area is these days.

From Audi SS to Holy Cross would take forever these days with traffic. I would say anything outside of just past Wheaton/Kensington/DTSS would take a lot more commute time than 15-20 minutes.

Dive bar/restaurant recommendation:

Quarry House - the best bar/burger joint in DTSS. Still in their temporary location since original location burned down last year.

Even the temporary location won't disappoint.

I looked all over this area and I would recommend,


those are the areas where I looked the most. The neighborhoods are safe and well maintained. The lower left corner of the map is really nice as well, but was out of my price range. For rentals you will have to move closer to DTTS, but try and stay on the left side. Its not an unsafe place, but it still is a city so some crime does happen. Basically stay to the left side of 29 and it gets more expensive the closer you get to DC. Hope this helps.

I've lived in Aspen Hill for 7 years. Nice place to live. If budget is less of a concern, Olney is a really nice place too.

Look at Maple Lawn. Just North of Silver Spring and a great community. There are always condos and townhomes for rent and some apartments coming.

This. It's really nice and they're actively improving the area. Burtonsville is a little closer to SS, but a step down.
