Exclamation All my Dumb Questions in one Thread (Updated with Pics)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello my name is Andrae (Andre), this is my second 2000 Audi A6 4.2 and I was wondering IF:

The steering wheel can be changed out for other Audi Steering wheels? If so what models?

The steering wheels in the 2000 a6 is ugly and make the interior looks extremely dated.

Is there anywhere I can purchase the mesh style euro grill for a 200 audi A6 I cannot find them anywhere, both upper and lower and corner pieces

I will update this thread a little later when I get home with pics and more details.

    Pics Below

Has two dents on the driver side rear fender that are eye sores to me.

    My understanding
All audi steering wheels fit but mfsw need to be modded for electronics.

No mesh grill fits, i think someone made some that fit. But it takes heavy modding google it you will find out quickly.

    Not dumb questions at all!

There is a sport 3-spoke wheel from various models between 2002 and 2005 that is the same shape but a few different variations (perforated, tip buttons, tip paddles, solid leather) you can even further and have a custom one made from the factory 3-spoke as a base. At that point the sky is the limit. Here's mine, fatter and more defined thumb grips, flat bottom, alcantara, RS 6 badge, tip buttons (I have a manual and I have rewired these to function volume and track, orange stitching and orange center hash.

The 4.2L has the facelifted front fenders headlight and hood and thus facelift grilles fit (including RS honeycomb (mesh) will want to see if it's plug and play, might need MINOR modification.

This is on my 2000 a6 - pre facelift. Grill is made by LLtek. Finding a facelift mesh grill from LLtek should not be too difficult, they made both. Might have to look through ebay, craiglist or maybe check LLtek to see if they still have one in stock.

Good luck! They can drive you up the wall!

Move the missing coil(s) around to non-missing cylinders and see if the miss follows.

Oh, and welcome and post up some pics of the beauty!!

Most later models bolt up, but the the airbags connectors are different. The 3-spoke steering wheels out of the B6 A4 are plug and plugs with out cars (there are a couple of 03' that actually come equipped with the same steering wheel). The B5 3 spoke wheels (like 99.5-2001.. not sure about the older models) are also compatible with your 4.2

The grille you're looking for, for your 4.2, is an RS6 grille -- Otherwise you would have to fabricate your own, as there aren't any aftermarket applications for the 4.2. There are a couple on ebay that are listed as "OEM", but I can't verify whether they are, or not.

    ex:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Audi-RS6...7-vZtg&vxp=mtr

They have the lower one too, just search their ebay store for it.

i forgot to edit it last night and post picks due to changing the oil doing some routine maintenance. I think i solved the misfire issue i had 2 brand new coils so i just swapped one in and the misfire stopped so i hope that is truly what it was.

Dude! Just scratch-less repair the dented eye sores, it should be pretty cheap and then you can sleep at night.

The OEMs are super pricey, I don't have a link but I've used raxles a few times and since he rebuilds everything OEM with OEM shafts it's the same quality for a nice discount.

    Raxles.com

Give them a call tomorrow and they'll take care of you. About $400ish for the front pair.

You kind of need a video, at least an idea of the area that the "grinding" noise came from.

Does the noise get more aggressive as you turn the wheel? -- Check powering steering fluid reservoir for foam/bubbles, could be getting air into the system.

Does it only happen on cold-starts? -- It could be the SAI (secondary air injection pump) going bad, it'll probably sound like a Jet getting ready for takeoff lol

Does it sound like chain rattle? Issue with the Cam chain tensioners.

Is your timing belt service up-to-date? It could be one of many roller bearings/Pulleys going bad.

Highly suggest to buy this. It will save your car from getting those welds bent over time.

It sound like it could possibly be the timing chain guide. I will try to get a video soon just been a little busy with work.

Do you have a write-up (or link to a write-up) of how you rewired the TIP buttons on your wheel to control Track & volume? Greatly appreciate it.
