if it just clicks, that sounds like your starter. usually if that's what it is, you can just keep trying and eventually it will turn over

clicking and no start could be the starter, but for the car to just shut off by itself?

was it clicking for a couple seconds? or just one click?

Cars need fuel, spark and air. If its not out of gas, then you need to start troubleshooting and the battery is a good place to start. These cars (as do most modern cars) need a strong battery to run properly. It sounds like you already know to get that checked quickly. Beyond the battery, it would be a good idea to pull the codes. If you don't know how to do that, most auto parts stores can get you a quick OBD2 scan which might give you some start points. Don't trust them implicitely though.

Starter issues on these cars definitely crop up. I am on my second one at 120K. First one went at 85K and there are lots of mentions here on the symptoms. Click and no start, but keep trying or come back to it in 5 minutes and it starts right up... that is almost always the starter.

from my experience, one click = starter
if it clicks a couple seconds = battery

If the car starts and then dies, it could be a bad alternator. Once your car is running, it uses the alternator to run everything. If the alternator isn't charging the battery back up, you will end up with a dead/bad battery, and a vehicle that will not stay running . If the car cannot be jump started and the car continues to click. ..it could be either your starter or the alternator/battery cables. Check resting voltage and cranking voltage. How many times does it click when you try to start it? Does it try to turn over at all?

If it started fine but died, I would suspect the alternator belt might have slipped off or broke. On the same thought when my battery died it wouldn't start or click at all, the car wouldn't even try to start if the voltage was low. If you can jump start it and it dies again then that would be the alternator. If you can jump start it and it runs but then quits, that's usually an alternator. I'm not sure with Audi, but every other vehicle I have owned you can test the alternator by jump starting it and once it is running remove the negative battery clamp. If it dies right away then you alternator is shot.

Assuming your battery is still powering your interior lights, headlights, starter, etc... i'm going to guess that you have either a spark or fuel issue.

Maybe blockage in fuel line, dead pump, no fuel (that would be hilarious fyi)

I can't imagine all eight coils and/or spark plugs dying/fouling simultaneously. Maybe the alternator isn't outputting enough to generate a spark??

Crazy bro, hope you figure it out :-)
