    Gas Gauge isn't reading.

Any reason for this? every now and than it will jump up to half full and then goes back to empty. sits at empty most of the time. Full tank of gas as well.

the sender in the tank is probably done. although the facelift models aren't known as well for this as the pre face lift, it still happens.

mine fluctuates as well. from what i understand, there is a copper wire in the fuel sending unit that i guess gets disconnected or breaks. sometimes i fill up and it goes to zero right away also. can be fixed. there is definitely a thread started about it already.

most of the face lift cars don't use the copper wire. if yours does the fix is easy if yours is the newer style it might just need to be cleaned or put back in place or just replaced with a used one.

OP the sender in the unit would be first on my list.

Read this first, since you'll have to take the fuel level sender out either way, typically the electrical contacts get corroded and start giving faulty readings.

However, I replaced mine entirely since the copper wire was completely broken. If that happens, find a used one in good shape and just put that in to replace the original.

Just had this exact same issue in my car. Found that the copper fuel sender connector to the hat prongs had some mild surface corrosion on it so I scratched connector's contact surface and mating hat prongs with a scribe until they were both shiny again and that fixed my bouncing gauge. Check that first and then check the leads at the sender if that doesn't do the trick. Make sure you disconnect the fuel pump and key on the ignition with the hat out before you put it all back to make sure it's all good again.

That or the flexible copper wire has broken. I replaced mine in like 2003 with a speaker wire voice coil wire I had laying around (braided copper). Just looked at it over ten years later and good to go.

This is the same problem I have right now. Havent tore into it to see about the wire. But i also heard the cluster could be bad. There's alot of guys who sell rebuilt clusters, new lcd screen, custom backgrounds ect. but exhaust all resources before a cluster. the Sender isnt expensive.

never heard of any part of the cluster aside from the lcd go bad. even cars with 200k miles on them.

Sender is by far the most common with that little wire bending back and forth in there and breaking.

This is how I do them to spread the the bendy out over as much wire as possible.
It normally runs under the arm and gets worked pretty good.

Get the best, most flexible wire you can find. Expensive rc car wire is fine, dont need much.

PS: Good luck getting the sender out. They are easy, but can be fun if you dont know how they clip in there
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

It's really not that bad. Just wait until the fuel system is depressurized and the gas tank is almost on E. Will be easier to work on.

Been driving around topped off a lot since the gauge isn't reading but letting it run low makes sense before the fix.

Thanks for the tips and link!

When I did this, I had the tank at less than a 1/4 full and gas was still mostly covering the sending unit. Also, make sure you pull fuse 28 in the fuse panel inside the car on the driver's side and start the car letting it run till it dies to minimize spillage out of the lines.
