In a bind - need a recommendation for a shop that can do brakes ASAP

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I purchased the full front and rear rotors and pads kit from ECS and my neighbor and I were able to get the fronts on just fine. I didn't know that we needed a laptop/VAGCOM/whatever it is to release the rear calipers so I could not do the rears by myself (I'm not very mechanically inclined, for the record). I am now grinding metal to metal in the rear and need to get this installed ASAP! Had the car in for service yesterday and Audi refuses to install aftermarket parts (and quoted me $788 for rear rotors and pads!), so I'm looking for a shop in the San Diego area that can help me out. Anyone have any recommendations? Any idea what I should expect to pay in labor?

Apologies if this should be in the SoCal thread, but this seemed like an appropriate place given my current state of panic and the godawful sound I hear every time I brake!

    HELP!!

TAG Motorsports is pretty well known in the Audi world. That's the only one off the top of my head.

I miss San Diego - grew up in Clairemont lol. Go Chargers!

Isn't ACG in San Diego? They can probably do it.

really need more info, what exactly did you do the rears? nothing should be grinding as a result of this unless you tried to muscle your way in?

I really hope that when you say "grinding metal to metal in the rear" that doesn't mean you took out the pads and didn't put ones back in......

Unfortunately I think the metal on metal is a result of the pads being completely worn, hence my desperate plea to find a local shop to help me out. If I don't find something by end of day tomorrow I'm going to have to suck it up and let Audi do it.

Thanks for the recommendations. Calling both of these places now....

Borrow or buy a vagcom cable. It's really simple with it.

You could buy the VAGcom cable and overnight it to you for less than the dealer is charging. Then you can use the cable for all kinds of other things as well.

Would this one work? I've been thinking about picking one up anyway, so I might as well use this as my excuse to "need" one.

I think you can unlock the rear brake with the carista app, perhaps just the beta?

True and theres a vid of a guy using a 12 or 6 volt battery to open and close it.

You can do this without VAGCOM. Use a 9 volt battery, fashion two wire leads to make contact with the spades for e-brake motor. Careful not to arc. You just need to run the motor long enough for it to disengage the piston completely. You will know it is disengaged by the sound it makes. Takes about a minute to disengage using the battery method if your brake pads are fully worn b/c the piston is fully extended at this point. Once you've replaced pads, reverse the polarity of the wires on the spades and clamp down the e-brake all the way. Make sure to do both sides FIRST before disengaging the e-brake to finally drive off else you'll get a fault code.

I used VAGCOM when I did my rears, but also tried the battery method as an alternate backup and it worked the same.
