    Power Steering Pump

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Want to get your feedback on this issue I had after driving to Vegas this weekend. The car ran flawlessly cruising 85-90 the whole way there, then right as I pulled into the hotel parking garage there was this rpm dependent sound. I am 99% sure it's the power steering pump, I know it's been weak for a while but only made some slightly noise on cold starts every now and then.

Took this video, the fluid level is unchanged and where it should be (although smells slightly burnt), no change in steering feel, did not make the noise on the way back to Socal, and when the pump was making noise the vacuum at idle would be up slightly.

turn the wheel, full lock to lock, and towards the ends, does the sound sync with that?

to me the sounds sounds like the idler/tensioner pulley, mine sounded exactly like that

My power steering pump is on its way out. It just whines. Sort of sounds like high pitch tone of a turbo from the exhaust at idle - I've actually had people compliment the sound of my 'turbos'. Not super loud like low fluid or anything, just a constant whining. I would expect power steering issues to sound this way.

As above, listen while turning lock-to-lock.

Was just reading through this thread, if it was the bearings in the power steering pulley then the pitch would not change while steering. It's been squealing for a while now when getting close to lock.

I replaced everything on the timing belt side, it definitely sounds like it's coming from the pump far more than from anything lower on the engine. So far I have found these as being the potential culprits, am I missing anything?

    - Power Steering pump bearings
    - Idler puller
    - Belt tensioner

Something you could check is if you are getting bubbles in the power steering fluid reservoir while the car idles.

I will check that out tonight, unfortunately (or fortunately) the noise is gone now so I can't have a closer listen for now. It's always scarier when something 'fixes' itself, that's the scariest thing.

I did the full everything goes timing belt kit last year, the engine itself is much newer than 300K. The one thing that I did not replace was the idler tension pulley, which could also make a similar noise. It's the only pulley I didn't replace.

Order the tensioner pulley. Easy to replace while doing the P.S. pump.

I'll order everything, shoot me a text if you have a time that works. Maybe we can find a weekend to do the Bosch check valve and engine mounts too.

Does this indicate Ps pump? My pump is loud too and when I turn it gets way louder. Air bubbles in my reservoir. Replaced fluid via turkey Baster method but no go.

My PS pump was making a loud noise a while ago. I almost bought a new pump but figured out that one of the clamps on the PS cooling line was loose, so it was letting air in. This also results in bubbles in the reservoir. Put a new clamp on and the noise and bubbles were gone.

In my infinite wisdom, I forgot to check if the fluid was bubbling this morning. Although, there's still not sound coming from the engine anymore. I know my power steering line is leaking very very slightly, could have just been a bit of air that got in on the drive to vegas.

I just replaced the serp belt tensioner on my allroad, it sounded like your vid until the pulley broke loose, yielded a tow truck ride home. I also reused the tensioner on my last TB job. When my p/s pump failed it was much more of a 'whine' in my experience.

That's what my research is pointing to, I would've replaced it with the timing belt if I knew it should be replaced at the same time. Ordering a new one today, I have a bunch of new continental serpentine belts so hopefully I can tackle that with jballou in the next week or two.

Can I ask a question? I have an A4 b7 cabriolet and when I pull up to my garage and turn off the motor I hear like a turbine sound. Can someone tell me what that is? It kind of sound Kool because reminds me of a jet turbine winding down. But concern if a part is getting ready to go out
    Thanks

Alright guys, for anyone needing to replace their pumps, do not cardone reman... It was bad already. Sounds like vibrations inside the pump when there is pressure. Probably bad bearings or something.... Blah!!!!! Gotta do it again

There is a short elbow coming off the side of the pump that is a culprit for leaking, it's a PITA to replace but you can manage, even with larger hands. Mine was so hard it broke into pieces taking it off. Also replace the cooler hose clamps and flush with fresh pentosin 11s. Very easy things to keep your power steering system operating smoothly.
