    2010 A4, TD1 flagged 1litre per 500KM consumption

I'm running Unitronic Stage 2, car runs fine but is burning a litre per 500KM (300M)

I recently changed the PCV diaphragm which helped quite a bit with the black smoke when getting on the throttle. With being flagged TD1 I won't get anywhere with the dealership, so no use even trying. So, I'll be looking at doing a motor rebuild. If I'm gonna do the motor, I might as well build it up with aftermarket rods, pistons, and an Integrated Engineering head & intake. With the poor CDN dollar, it's going to cost me a small fortune. If I build the motor is the oil consumption issue going to come back over time?

I've got plans to put an EFR or something on this after building the motor. Want some serious power out of this if I'm going to drop a bunch more money into the car.

How much longer will I be able to drive the car before I risk it blowing up? I'm taking it easy, but it seems my oil consumption is pretty high. Worried about it grenading before I get the motor pulled to build it.

It runs smooth, good idle, decent power, just goes through a serious amount of oil.

Thoughts? Am I running on borrowed time already? Can't see any oil leaks either.

    Thanks!

First, what oil are you using?
Second, have you completed a compression check to see if it's the cylinder / rings versus the PCV system?
Have you inspected the turbocharger for seal leakage, or drained the intercooler to see if there's any pooling?

Thanks for the suggestions bluefox280. I'm using Audi spec Motul 5W40.

I'll have to get a compression check done soon. Thanks didn't think of that ... :)

There's a couple threads on here where guys have been in your same situation and the oil consumption did not go away after rebuilding and their threads kinda dropped dead. I would read em if you feel like doing some searching

I've just rebuilt mine. Was burning 1L every 1200km it had 60k km. Then 1L every 800km at about 100k km. Then 1L every 500km at about 135k km. That lasted about 10k km before I started to get issues. Blocked up breather, misfires etc.

Rebuild just completed with over sized pistons in case the cylinders were scored. Rods, bearings, intake & exhaust valves & guides, timing chain kit, oil pump, water pump, flywheel and clutch.

So far so good on the oil burning but early days. I've only done 400km no oil drop on the MMI no smoke when wot. But yesterday I found an oil leak, mechanic says it's an o ring, nothing major.

My mechanic said the cause of my oil burning was the fact that my valve guides were worn. He said that as long as I use the right oil and change every 5k km it should be fine. The pistons were fine and the cylinders were ok as well, but I started purchasing all the parts about a year ago & read about the issue with pistons rings and didn't wanna risk it.

If the rebuild is done right and correct preventative maintenance is completed then it should be fine.

Being that this is a known issue I'd be surprised that the dealer or AoC won't help you out. I'd give it one last shot before ponying up all that cash.

Thanks Roxta, sounds like I am heading in the same direction as you .. have about the same mileage. I bought it CPO at 100K, have put about 35k on it over 1.5 yrs.

Guess I need to really start saving ... and plan on doing a full overhaul in the spring. Already did a Stage 2 Enhanced clutch a month ago. I stay on top of the oil changes etc. So that won't be an issue. I tend to take very good care of my rides.

Lambda13, I've already had one hell of a time trying to get them to cover failed wheel bearings, flat out refused no matter what. Same was with the steering rack. No go ... all because of the Stage 1 tune I had on it. I was such a noob. When I took it in for the wheel bearing replacement I didn't think they would plug in the car ... they did, proceeded to remove the tune, reset the ECU and then called me to tell me my warranty was void. Nice .... LOL

I'm TD1 with a full Stasis package that was sold along with the vehicle. I'm the second owner and will try to see if the original dealer will help me out wrt to Stage 2.

If you do end up in there, make sure you replace the timing chain, tensioner and any worn guides.

Yes, STA4, once I rip the engine out, it will be a complete rebuild ... including all of the known weak links such as the timing chain tensioner etc. No way I want to miss anything and have to rip it out again.

I would suggest a compression test first to make sure its actually the pistons burning oil before spending all the money for a rebuild.

Yeah MM is definitely not tuner friendly. Would never consider tuning my car (as much as I want to) while still under warranty. It's too bad you didn't live in Toronto. Because Pfaff has their own tuning department i've heard they're super mod friendly.

    Hey Ryan_sn

Ya, too bad I don't live in TO. MM are the only shop in town ... Too far of a drive to find a more tuner friendly dealer. I've just given up on going to the dealer for anything. AoC wasn't any better either.

Oh well, moved on. Now I'm planning the compression check and see where the problem is. If it is the rings, then start buying the bits and planning to overhaul. It just sucks that the dollar is so weak these days!

Hopefully you get something figured out! And if you're ever at an Audi meet up in the area im usually free. Truthfully though I have a very good relationship with the service dept at MM and I genuinely love their service advisors. They've been nothing but helpful to me and have gone out of their way for me several times, so I personally have no problem going to see them for anything. I've been a customer for 10 years though and have given them a boat load of money in warranty claims so there's that too haha. But I can definitely feel for your situation. I'm sure you've heard of Rodgers Performance in the west end? They've got great reviews as an Audi shop.
