    Mixed feelings about new car

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’ve been a big fan of Audi for a long time especially of it’s superior Quattro technology. Last summer during the trip I decided to rent A4 B8 which was 1.8 FWD and completely fell in love. Comfort and dynamic were unbelievable comparing to Mazda 6. That moment I knew it would be my next car.

So more than 2 weeks ago I got A4 B8 2.0 TFSI Quattro 2015 with S line package and already drove around 700 km following the break-in period recommendations. Everything was perfect for the first 500 km, I managed to install alarm system and cover my beauty with ceramic coating. But then some strange things started happening.

First of all, driver’s door began to rattle on small bumps and potholes. Only after dealing with rattling I learned from forums that it’s one of A4’s problems which can be fixed with wax or rubber elements for locks. Ok, not big deal, even though the car ran just 500 km…

Secondly, the oil level dropped on 1 division after 500 km which I believe is about 200 ml (checked both on MMI and dashboard display). Is gen3 engine supposed to use that much? I thought that problem was mostly solved since gen2.

After rattle and oil drop my enjoyment started to pass into anxiety/paranoia about my absolutely new car. I noticed how in heavy traffic it’s uncomfortable to keep up with other cars because of S tronic constantly shifting up. I’m doing 60 km/h, holding my pedal on the same level and it’s already on 5th or 6th gear with engine doing that weird heavy “buzz” like diesel engine. The only comparison that comes to my mind - it’s like switching to a higher gear on a bicycle when it becomes harder to spin the pedals on low speeds. S tronic is doing absolutely the same. At the same time if I step more on the pedal it will shift down and easily accelerate.

Although I’m going to visit the dealer in a few days I wanted to hear your opinions if I got unlucky with that car or this is within the mark of German quality (doubtful).

welcome to the B8. hahah! I know exactly how you feel. I'm hoping a tune will mitigate the lag

Im guessing this is your first turbo car?

The 5th 6th gear not accelerating thing is due to how long the rpms are and the required amount to spool the turbo. When it downshifts the rpm rasies and thus spools the turbo and accelerated much easier.

If you put it in S mode, it will upshift much less in traffic than in D. Alternatively, tap it over and manually shift it up and down to stay in a comfortable rpm. The tranny is efficient, its not a fault, its just what it is.

1 notch is literally nothing. considering youre in the break in period, I wouldn't read into it at all. Also kind of curious why youd watch it so aggressively this early?!

Stage 1 tune and an inlet hose will help to reduce the lag. An intake will as well, but you then get to hear the horror story that is the sounds this turbo can produce.

    Yeah, first turbo car.

Probably watching it because of all the "oil consumption" threads And since it's new I want to know about the possible problem asap and take it to dealer.

Also forgot to mention about one more weird thing that happened 3 days ago. During traffic jam I was going pretty slow in D mode and S tronic was switching from 1 - 2 - complete stop - 1...etc and after one of those stops S tronic decided not to shift up. I was doing about 20 km/h with 3000 RPM on the 1st gear, it just didn't want to switch to 2nd so I had to switch to Manual and back to D so gearbox could reset.

S-Tronic is the dual clutch transmission... isn't that only in the S4?

ROW gets it on the A4. But ya I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wait until after the break in period to see if you have issues still. Plus the oil consumption problem was mostly for earlier B8s, as far as I'm aware the 2013+ had no issues with it.

Read the manual. I have an S3 and A3 and the manual states the following.....consumption may be higher in the first 3500km and pending driving situations .5 litres per 1k may be consumed. Also as mentioned, the dsg is aggressively tuned for fuel savings when in D mode. These are high compression engines and Subaru and Honda fall into this category. Id keep an eye on the oil level - check levels every other fill up.

Welcome to the B8 and Audi section!

I can't speak to the door rattle, I've had 2 of these cars and never experienced it. Doesn't seem like it would be a difficult fix.

Regarding oil consumption, the B8.5s (and really even be '12 B8s) are almost entirely devoid of the issue. It probably has to doing with break in, so I wouldn't let it stress you out. It's under warranty for a long, long time. Keep an eye casually on it like you would for any car and if there's a problem you'll know.

Audi tunes their transmissions aggressively for fuel economy, which is what you're experiencing in traffic. My 6AT drove me nuts in stop-and-go traffic with constant jerky shifts from 1-2-1. DSGs are less smooth to begin with, and I'd highly recommend driving it in manual mode (all the time, but especially in traffic) to a.) get the most out of it and b.) have the smoothest driving experience. I've noticed that this helps immensely with S-tronic A3 loaner cars I've had.

The high speed lugging you're talking about is a result of the same efficiency programming. The turbo doesn't start doing much until somewhere around 2500 RPM, and it really wakes up in the mid-3k range. Keeping the car out of the powerband helps with efficiency, so a quick downshift should solve that. It isn't an issue, just a behavior that turbo cars have under certain conditions. As others mentioned, a tune could help with this by increasing power, however you'd void your powertrain warranty.

I hope you enjoy the car! Do you have any modification plans for it?

I have had a four audi's and NEVER heard of rattles ever. The fit and finish are amazing and i would check with the dealer.

as far as transmission I had the S-Tronic and they are great transmission. Never had a problem even after heavily modified engine and DSG tune....

I now really enjoy my ZF now on both my Q5 and A4.....

I would not worry about it it is still under warranty take it in and let them know

But enjoy your car they way you wanted it.... These cars are amazing.
