    Morning gents,

I've spent a lot of time and money on my Avant only to lose it to a simple bullshit accident that could've been avoided. I'm looking for a "decent" replacement to my Avant but sort of stuck at a crossroad as to what I want for a daily. I've literally gone across the spectrum in terms of my choices, from a Pontiac G8 GT/GXP to an F80 M3 and even "downgrading" to an F31 328i xDrive Sportswagon. As of this moment, I'm sorta just lingering around, bouncing back and forth between the F31 and B8.5 AR.

Question is for the ones that transitioned from the 4.2 V8 to anything less than a 6cylinder...how did you all like it? Does it leaving you wanting more?

Any suggestions you all have that covers my price range of >$30K used?

9mo old twins plus 6yr old; this would be my daily so they wouldn't really ride in it unless I was off that day and needed to transport them somewhere but wifey has manage to transport all of them in her silly little Prius soooo there's that feat.

My want for a wagon is purely for entertainment but is NOT a necessity. As I said earlier, I've gone across the spectrum for what I would like and the F80 M3 really fancies me but just too damn expensive, as does the Giulia

In that case I'd avoid the 4cyl cars. Don't get me wrong, the 2.0T motors in the F31/B8.5 are great DDs. Tuned they're nipping on the V8 S4s heels performance wise. They feel completely different though. All 4cyls have certain Noise, Vibration, and Harshness that is inescapable. The 2.0Ts are all low to mid-range power and lack top end. So even though they're quick, they don't feel or sound anywhere near as good as a 6 or 8. As an enthusiast, especially one use to a 6 or 8, you'll always dislike those qualities. If a wagon isn't a must get an S4 or 335i. They may give up a few cubic feet or cargo space, but its much nicer having a larger, smoother, more powerful motor.

I just picked up a B8.5 Allroad. It's got plenty up go-power, and if you get the ADS option (or VAG-hack it) the throttle and transmission respond a lot more aggressively. Driving that now as my daily, and honestly the only thing I'm missing from the S is the sound and rowing through gears.

I went from a bolt-on B7 S4 to an 8P A3 for a short time. I put a turbo-back on it and a tune and it was definitely quick, but left me wanting more sound and a more solid feel that I got with the much heavier S4. The A3 might be an exceptional case because it's essentially a glorified vw but I'd wager you'll be left wanting more if you go toward a 4-cyl audi. Also, your spectrum is extremely wide if you're considering a new m3!! If I were in your position, I'd definitely go for a medium-low mileage B8 S4 manual. You get crazy gains for the $$ put in on what seems to be a reliable engine, the car looks fantastic and sounds better (imo) than the new m3/m4, and you get to keep the solid feel that you're used to from the B7. Also, I'm very sorry to hear about your car, 'tis the stuff of nightmares :(..

If I was to ever replace the s4 avant, it'd be for a new allroad. Sorry for your loss

Honestly i had a love for avants as well and recently sold my beloved 57k b6 6spd avant….I always lusted after a rs4 and just picked one up, love it even more than the wagon! with your budget i'd strongly recommend checking out a rs4…it's everything you wanted your s4 to be..and then some! Coarse i also contemplated finding a 4.2 v8 allroad and attempting a 6spd swapthen I remembered i had kids close to same age and that wasn't a realistic project to bite off

I went from a 2007 S4 to a 2015 GTI S about a year ago and I have very few regrets. I miss AWD and V8 but don't miss 14 mpg. I live at 7200 feet above sea level so I never got to fully appreciate the power of the N/A 4.2. I'm very impressed with all the GTI has to offer, it's a great DD with plenty of utility. The backseat is a tad bigger and more comfortable along with the benefits of a hatch. I love DSG and I love the 2.0 TSI, my only complaint is you can't get a GTI with 4motion. It's a great option for someone looking for better gas mileage without having to sacrifice much in overall performance.

Like this answer the best, thanks for the honesty. I'm not a fan of the B8/8.5 S4s, something about them irks me; can't place my finger on it but I feel like I'm removed from the car, as if I'm just sitting there numb, holding a steering wheel.

I should probably browse the Avant section for your progress thread but what have you done with your AR, performance wise? Comparable to your old S (can't remember what mods you did to it)?

Such a silly notion by Audi not to have the AR with a 3.0T as the base engine.

    Oh and I have considered a 4dr e90 M3

This is without reading any posts. So, I would honestly look for some nice G8 GXP, not the GT because the GXP has the 6.3? corvette engine. And let me tell you, on my way back from Virginia to New Jersey, I raced one he said he had full straight pipe and tune and he ate me alive. I only have about 307 dynoed awhp for my S4. But that GXP is not a bad looking car and it's fast as shiii

What about a Panamera? You can get it in all flavors. 6 or 8, NA or turbo and RWD or AWD. It's got the space like an avant... But certainly not the same price as a B6/7.

If you like the G8, look into the Chevy SS, much much much better looking inside and out. Same platform.

Surprised you're not into a B7 RS4. Is it just because they don't do the Avants over there?

^That would be a good starting point for an potentially epic project.

    Since you're considering M3 sedan, I'm going to throw a wild card e39 M5???

Looked into it and well considering I have a better option WITH AWD in the X5, guess what I'm leaning towards .

I submitted an inquiry with the owner today to see where his price point lies. I also put in a quote to Navy Federal to see what my monthly payments would be; also submitted a quote for insurance via USAA.

Next thing is to see how "reliable" the N63 4.4i is ....I've been known to take on things that go boom unexpectedly

Those V8s haul quite well actually. Comfortable inside and got room to spare for cargo. I'd suggest getting one with extra row of seats, especially for those with kids, comes in real handy.

AR has an underpowered 2.0L turbo4.
    SQ5 has subtle 3.0L S/C V6.
    X5 xDrive50i has a ticking time bomb 4.4L V8TT.

Ed, you know me well enough to understand which one has JUST captured my heart.

If you go with x5 im sure you will like it but remember it a fucking heavy car so even with v8 its not gonna be super quick, but it is pretty damn quick for an suv. I enjoy mine and its perfect daily.
