You guys recommend just replacing the PCV or getting the kit with the
    Breather hose
    Breather hose gasket

How wise is it to consider changing the PCV as preventive maintenance @120.000km?

My oil consumption is normal (low) 1/2 quart every 3.000 - 4.000km. The car doesn't smoke or stink.
I'm up for a carbon clean in 10k. Will also replace the injectors and coil packs and am also considering the PCV if it's advised?

PCV install with intake manifold in place?

I would test it, pull oil cap off while running. If shot, it dies, if good; slight hesitation and then fine/smooth idle. Mine totally died and now smooth idle after slight hesitation, and oil consumption roughly half of what it used to be.

Means that the engine will stop after pulling the oil cap?

    - Got a low oil warning today.
    - Pulled the oil cap while engine was running.
    - Engine hesitated but continued to run.
    - The idle at which it ran was very rough @500rpm (instead of normal 760rpm)
    - If I put my hand over the opening it got sucked-in (is this normal?)
    - When I put the cap back (or covered the opening tight with my hand) the idle stabilized
    - The low oil warning was gone and the oil level read 59.5mm (low warning @51mm)

Could this be a sign of a slowly going PCV. That it's clogged a bit, but not completely - due to the rough idle and oil level stabilizing after releasing the pressure?

Sounds like it might be on the way out but not dead like mine. Mine totally stabilizes (with new) and runs normal but your sounds like it partially works since mine died right away. Might be a good idea to change to reduce carbon build-up. And since we all seen your video, we know you are a handy guy and can easily do it. Also, hate to say it - but did not see enough beers around your car during the video! :)

I see a lot of people mentioning that they're pulling the oil cap's off while running, and I think it stemmed from a post I made a few months ago saying that's how I diagnosed my failing PCV, so I want to be clear about something.

Before you remove your oil cap, make 100% sure there is no dirt/grime/sand in and around the area where the rubber gasket seals to the valve cover because you would be making your engine suck in some/all of it. Before you do the test, I would shut the engine off, clean that area really well with a vacuum cleaner and some brake parts cleaner or throttle body cleaner, then do your test.

I'm starting a class action lawsuit against FWP for a post he made months ago suggesting I should remove my oil cap to diagnose a failing PCV. I had just dusted my engine bay in metal shavings and when I pulled my oil cap it all got sucked in!!! Then I had misfires one cylinder which then spread to all cylinders but I kept driving my car. PM me if you experienced the same thing.

    just to clarify, not serious

This is what happened with mine, it was not Shot, but on its way out. Just replace it when your manifold is off for a CC.

Those damn shavings. I get them in every damn oil-change. I've worked already through my 6th oil pump and pan by now. Isn't this normal?!

    On my ToDo list! :)

2nd Carbon clean -> Pull & Clean injectors -> Change PCV -> Change oil filter housing gasket & manifold gasket -> Beer

Is there any "good" brand of PCV valve? I see ECS has four or five listed, along with the OEM.

    And have never been happier

I just wanted to add a quick note regarding PCV replacement ($200+ part) and my personal experience with it.

My oil level low light used to come on every two weeks. This had been an issue all of last year... very embarrassing as it would happen right when I had a passenger and they would see it too. Anyways, I had my PCV replaced at the time of CC more than 4 months and have not had to top oil off since then at all. I also do not have a hint of burning oil smell either. Mine did not smoke before and has not smoked since then either.

IMHO, as this car is aging now, this needs to be part of maintenance every 50-60 k miles. I do not believe that it needs to be changed any earlier than that. I do drive my car quite aggressively, but not abusingly (is that a word?).

Since this is an Audi, I am sure that something else is about to go bad now that I have this fixed.
Switched to Tesla and have never been happier. No more shady mechanic bills and excuses - oil top off before an oil change is normal or dealing with outdated forums that have image size limitations. And no more dealing with vendors that do not provide horsepower numbers but sell you random things by labeling them as performance parts. No more dealing with the Audi dealership and having to buy custom Audi specific tools. Wow. I can't believe I lived through all of this. Money pit.

As I described my symptoms earlier in this thread, I have recently found rests of oil-fumes/grease around the hose that goes to the PCV from the top of the passenger valve cover. Could this be related with a failed PCV or is there any other reason for this? I checked the complete engine and there was no grease/oil anywhere else. So hopefully the unattended PCV issue that is now apparently completely blocked - I'm assuming I found grease around where the hose attaches as it was pushed out under pressure when driving the car hard.

In any case I'm just ordering a new PCV and will change it as soon as I get back home and have time to wrench the car. The low-oil light was getting more and more frequent.

"self-bump" any input on the question above from anybody?

ps: PCV ordered. In the EU the dealer price for a new one is 160€ (that's 170$-ish).

Not sure on the traces of oil around the valve, since I never checked prior to change so no reference point now. But mine had definitely failed, and with new one I would say slightly less oil consumption/smoke but not a drastic change. Got used to the RS going through a bit more than I was used to with other cars/brands.

Sorry for bumping this thread… just curious if any of you guys replaced the pcv with a different, cheaper brand, other than oem? RockAuto has them for 80-90 vs 350 😒

Not sure if there’s really a need for OEM on this plastic bucket?

I recommend checking out these replacement valves which you use with your existing PCV housing. I wish I knew these existed before I shelled out over $200 for the OEM PCV a few months ago.

Yes, you can only change the membrane without disassembling the PCV. Simply unclip the round cap with a small

    screwdriver and replace the membrane.

I replaced mine with Reid from RockAuto... But then I took the OEM one apart and the diaphragm was intact... there was nothing wrong with my PCV bucket... but I just replaced it because the car has 107k miles.
