    Coolant leak

    Hi there,

Im fairly new to this forum. I registered a couple weeks back when I was researching a car I was going to buy and found that there are a bunch of very knowledgeable ppl here when it comes to owners of Audi cars.

i eventually bought an Audi A4 Avant 2.0t Quattro wagon last week. I let my mechanic do a quick inspection of the car before I bought it. He did all the basics or what $50 dollars can get you and found nothing wrong with it. I noticed this past thursday the reservoir for the coolant fluid was low and figured I should just take it in to an indy shop that specializes on working with Audi cars for a Coolant flush. They did a full inspection of the car and found that there was a leak in the rear of the engine from a hose close to the pump. They said that they would need to replace the pump and a sensor plus a vacuum? The total charge for the fix would be $1700 plus. I told them to go ahead and fix it so I wouldnt have to worry about it causing more problems for me in the future.

I get home and do some research (Here on Audizine) and found this http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...t=coolant+pump

Would this be an easy fix if it was just a flange thats causing the problem or is replacing the pump and vacuum something I should just do to prevent further issues down the line.

My Avant has 108 thousand miles on it and runs really great. Would hate to invest money on this car and have it be a recurring problem for me.

Coolant flanges are a common problem and on these 2.0T. should be about $350.00 imo. A new oem part is $40.00 with the O- rings. that should fix the problem and I suggest a new hose since those have warping issue's once removed

The mechanic suggested replacing the pump as well, should I go ahead and give the ok on that or just wait? If its just the Flanges and the O-rings, that'll save me a bunch of money

I cant a vacuum pump failure at that mileage. If and when they do fail its usually leaking oil externally not coolant. If the vacuum pump is seeping oil. Most likely the O-Ring is leaking and that can be ed separately also.
They suggested to the pump as some of the mechanics remove that to get to the coolant flange.

Ok, Guess I'll just have him replace it now that way I dont have to worry about it later in the future. Im hoping that this is the only major problem I have for the next 6 months cause this car experience for me is cutting into my pockets and I havent put 50 miles into the car yet.

    Thanks for the response

It all depends on technician that is your car. But some will the timing chain cover also. And that will be a good chance for you to the cam follower. Which is a must to do on these 2.0T. The follower is about $35.00 oem
These are cars. They require more then average maintenance to keep it . But overall Im with it

$1700+ seems crazy expensive. What city are you located in?

Have you tried Alpine Foreign Auto Repair? They seem to have good reviews. My car has a small coolant leak in the back as well but I plan to fix it myself. Parts aren't very expensive, but it's a pain to reach back there.
