Shifter doesn't go back to middle

I bought this car a couple weeks ago. The PRev owner said he has a JHM short shifter with Delrin bushings. My other s4 has just the short shifter and it doesn't have issues "coming back to center". Moving from side to side it will just stay there. I don't remember there being a spring mechanism inside the short shifter (besides reverse). So how does it spring back to center when going in neutral???

its spring loaded by a detent on the transmission which loads the selector shaft. JHM makes a modified detent that compresses the spring and makes it harder to go side to side.. I'm going to be ordering one soon

Im assuming thats the issue. Not quite sure if they're a common wear item or common to break, but thats the only thing thats spring loaded for neutral

detents only hold the forks from coming out of gear. once through the detent the shift collar/syncho assembly is what is supposed force it back to center.

Naw, those detents only handle forward/backward.

Side to side is the the thing in the jhm pic above.
That one rides in a V-notch on the selector shaft and gets compressed by the sides of the V when you go left/right.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

Any idea of how accessible the detent is with the tranny in car?

WHERE DOES IT GO? This upgraded detent-centering spring installs in the transmission near the selector shaft cover. This is best done with the transmission out of the car, but can be done (with some difficulty) by just lowering the trans and engine down in the rear)
Thats from JHMs website, not sure if they include instructions or not.

That one prob isnt too tough to get to. Its a 27mm iirc so finding a tool that fits in there will prob be the hard part.
Ive swapped them all before and nothing stands out so must not have been that bad.
