    Rotating tires (TPMS)

Has anyone rotated their tires with TPMS sensors installed? Wondering if there is any need to recode through VAGCOM or if it'll auto relearn the wheel positions using the "store tire pressure" through MMI menu?

As I've learnt here TPMS works via wheel speed sensors also used for traction control, ABS. There are no 'TPMS sensors'.

Also I remember reading in the manual - it recommends rotating tyres (mindful of tyre rotation direction), no mention of any TPMS concerns.

Also the typical user would not have access to VAGCOM to complete a procedure recommended in the user manual.

Ie. You're totally safe to do it, if the front-rear tyre pressures are different TPMS may get annoyed, just reset it.

I have an '16 RS7. On the RS the wheels have individual wireless sensors vs through the ABS. Since each sensor shows the tire pressure and temp for left front, left right, rear left, rear right, was curious if anyone had any experience with rotating tires and having to recode/calibrate the tpms sensors.

i don't think it really matters if you move the wheels around. i believe the sensors are mated with another local sensor on that particular corner of the vehicle.

The RS7 and R8 specifically have TPMS sensors. All other models do not.

So if I'm getting new wheels on an rs7, do I need to be doing anything with this tpms?

You will need new tpms for each new wheel ~$130 each Otherwise you will get error messages

When you rotate you just need to reset tire pressures via MMI

Or if you skip the sensors, you can use VAGCOM to disable the error message

Of course I do; because the wheels aren't expensive enough. :p

Every day I learn why I can't afford a RS7, even if I could afford the purchase price. Why in the world aren't the sensors reusable?

So, on the S6, I don't need to buy sensors for my winter wheels, right? Thanks!

I don't know about the RS7 but in general, TPMS can be reused but often need to replace the rubber grommet. They are somewhat fragile though and if you get one that gets bumped wrong, it's a PITA to get figured out. On a $100k+ car and spending extra on wheels, is that really the piece that is going to make or break though? Spend the dough.

For the question about the S6, no you don't need to worry. There are no sensors...it's all ABS.

I also thought the S6 used the ABS sensors, to detect an abnormal wheel rotation. I was surprised that my MY16 S6 said that the tire pressure was in range when I recently set it. I guess they must store the last rolling rate, so they can check it when you set it while stationary.

Rotated my tires criss cross on the RS7 and can confirm that the TPMS module will relearn the new positions. In my case I needed to "clear DTCs" in vag to reset the TPMS module as I had temporarily disabled it for the winter tires.
