    Odometer Rollback?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I found another allroad that sparked my interest. Highland green, relatively low miles (103k). I'm looking up the vehicle history report and among the 3 accidents (non salvage title) out also has a discrepancy with possible odometer rollback concerns.

What's your input? Different gauge cluster or can the mileage be manually adjusted through programming?

I'm thinking possibly a new ecu and cluster, because I know the mileage is stored in the ecu. I'm not sure if the cluster stores the mileage. But I guess the cluster could have its own mileage.

The mileage can be changed in the cluster, it happens by lots of us on here when we swap replacement or S or RS clusters into other models. So it's possible. It's also possible that there was a clerical error. When selling cars I came across many erroneous carfax and autocheck reports in many areas of the reports, not just odometer.

I guess if it were me I would be wary of possible rollback, but wouldn't necessarily rule it out if the condition and price still works if the car did have vastly more miles.

Yeah, my searches are coming up short lol. First one was a flood and total loss due to an accident. Second one sold the day before I could make the trip. This one with the odometer issues and the owner is sketchy. Keep looking!!!

If the cluster has over 100 kilometers, then the mileage cannot be changed with the standard diagnostic tools. More than likely I'd say the cluster was replaced.

mileage is only stored in cluster.
Mileage can be easily changed/hacked into with $10 dollar ebay cable and software to change to anything you want.

Obviously assume the car is 200k miles now and thus either offer $1000 for it or simply don't buy it.

Not sure if state or federal laws take precedent, but it's a HUGE fine to tamper with ODO reading. Technically in many states that car is illegal to register if the ODO was changed and not documented. The owner at the time the discrepancy is documented could be guilty of a felony if anywhere in the paperwork they checked the box that says 'I testify that the odometer reading is the actual mileage' or whatever is on the title for that state.
Usually there's another box that says 'Odometer in excess off 100,000 miles, may not be actual reading' or something. The fact that Odo can be hacked on these cars now kinda pisses me off, but so far not many people can really figure it out (yet).

I didn't buy it. Took the trip to Virginia to check out 3 cars. 1 sold on Thursday, the other was taken to auction on Friday (d2 s8) and this one with the odometer discrepancy. I asked the seller about the 3 accidents and if he knew anything about the odometer and he never responded. Pre

Vag Tacho costs like 15-20$ with the cable and software. You can make it read whatever you like.

Going to check out a burgundy this weekend! I like the green exterior, but the green interior is too much lol.

I LOVE the green on green, I think it's my favorite color combo for a c5 allroad, aside from maybe the Olympic Sprint Blue ones but they just got the boring black/grey interior, Audi should've given those a unique interior.

Good luck on the search, let me know if u need me to check anything out on Long Island. I live in western LI but deliver meat all the way out to montauk for work so I've got the whole island covered lol.
