    Mysterious Coolant Leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been having a mysterious coolant leak. I will fill the reservoir maybe twice a day. I can't seem to find any leaks anywhere.

Has anyone heard of anything like this?

I would probably jack up the car, take off the belly pan and run the car while looking around from the top and the bottom. I'm sure you'd see the leak then but I've heard of people's reservoirs cracking.

Could possibly be the coolant flange on the backside of the engine. They get heat cycled quite a bit back there. Might want to check into that.

Just had mine repaired on the S. It was difficult to pinpoint until it became really bad. It ended up being the radiator tank itself, at the edge where the black tank meets the cooling fins. It would spew out like Old Faithful on the freeway sometimes.

I'm losing coolant as well, (maybe not quite as fast as you though. 1 qt/liter per week) No puddles under the car. I've found a pink coolant splotch baked from exhaust heat between the engine and the catalytic converter. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from though. 10 degrees F out and I gave up. I'll have to look for this flange.

Maybe this will help us all visualize possible leak locations.

The most common failure points on the 2.0T are the coolant reservoir, damage to the radiator and the rear water flange. The flange itself is located directly behind the cylinder head. There are a few components that need to be removed to have decent access to it.

That engine picture does not look like a 2.0 TSI or TFSI engine.....looks more like a 1.8T used in older A4s....
