so i'm in the northeast and have a stage III, a4, 2.0T, but I don't like the fact that moisture in the catch can would freeze on really cold days, so i'm thinking about putting a different engine in the A4. I was thinking of buying a 2.0T and going to a stage II, or a 3.2 V6 and living without a turbo. I'm a boost fiend, but have another turbo car if i really miss it. I just wanted some opinions on what are some nice engine swaps to consider for a DD, with some Hp fun. i don't want to get crazy with re-wiring anything or custom mounts.. Let me know..

I would just put the stock PCV back on also. I find it kind of funny that you are willing to spend the time and money to do an engine swap, but not empty your catch can a little more frequently.

That's what I looked for and settled for my 2.0T auto. It's very hard to find. Then you've got the whole timing chain issue on that motor....

This motor doesn't have the plastic timing chain adjusters that the v8s do

Sure it does. And they're on the back of the motor. Gotta pull it to get to them. And over 100K miles a lot of them are making noise now. A full kit of all chains and tensioners is in the $1,500 range.

Are you 100% on that? I've read no reports of chain issues with less than 180ish...

I'm not at my computer so I can't do any digging but if you're right that's a bummer. Good news is at 112k miles I have 0 chain noise at start up or otherwise.

Yea me and a buddy buy problem cars. Lots of Subarus (chronic head gasket problem), and lately seen a few 3.2 with timing chain problems. Almost bought a B7 with noisey chains a week or two ago. 112,000 miles, he wanted too much.

Google it, you'll see lots of talk. Here's an example, but I'm not sure how he concludes it's due to maintenance.

reason is: I think engine is blown and i'm rebuilding and don't want the same issue. I find it annoying to empty the catch can every day and evening in below freezing weather. That's not the kind of car I want for a DD with some HP. I'd rather spend the money on a faster car that i can drive, and park, repeat.

Ahh, that's a rather important detail you left out. Drop in the 4.2 FSI from an A6/A8/Q7. It's basically the same as the RS4 engine, but without the high rpm parts and more low end torque. No timing chain issues on those motors either.

Should be pretty easy, but I'm not sure specifically what you would need. Probably no different than putting an S4 engine in. Everything you need should already exist in the form of an S4 or RS4 part, so you shouldn't need anything custom.

so i like rare fun cars and been back and forth with swapping engine and selling vs building something fun (2.5 or 3.0T stg II, s4 or rs4 engine) a friend of mine just crashed his 06, A6 auto and I was also thinking i may be able to use his engine for a win.

If his insurance totals it, tell him you will give him the buyback amount the insurance wants.

You only have to empty it once every 4 days at worst id say if its really cold. Maybe once a week. Just do it while you pump gas.

You can daily drive the 2.7t, but its a pain in the balls to work on. In the B5 S4 world those guys are constantly pulling their engines though they do get beat on. In stock form they can be pretty reliable, but the thing has two turbos. Who leaves it stock? Frankly, I would love to do this swap. I have a K04 B5 S4 and the difference in power between my gt2871 b7 and that is night and day.

not lazy. just think its a mediocre design. also if i do open up the engine and it is blown, i'm not going to replace it with mediocrity. i'd rather use a better design. i had to drain it every night or morning or it would freeze and push back pressure into the engine, blowing oil everywhere and out the oil cap and drivign a smoking car down the road. not fun.

thats a good idea..i always thought the extra pressure from the stage III kit would have adverse effects if I did that. I didn't actually think it through though..

I park in a under ground garage. Very rare it will see anything below 40 degree's. So no freeze ups
