Recoded my tail lights...almost got what I was after...

Recently got a vagcom cable (finally) and was messing around with the taillight configuration - going for the euro spec look with the separated brake and turn signal. I used some coding I found on another forum for the A6 tails (right before I sold her) that I had bookmarked last year and just used a little logic to figure out the facelift A/S/RS5 tails. I assume it's the same for the A/S4's.

Unfortunately what I discovered was that the center part of the light (or the inside side of the larger outside section...wait, yeah) has the top and bottom clusters of lights on the same circuit - damn. So the turn signal creates a "T" effect that's actually kind of cool I guess. Might keep it for a while, until I just crack and buy the euro tails and do it properly ha!

I do really like the brake lights better this way though, and I like the signal blinking independent of the brake.

Opinions welcome - do you like stock better, or this "modified euro"?

Happy to share the coding if anyone's interested, pretty easy to mess around with and hard to F up. When searching the topic on AZ I saw another mapping but my findings differed slightly I think. Although I wish I'd searched beforehand as the A6 individual light segment's channels were totally different and it took me a little bit to decode them all - 16 I think, but really just 8 with their pair on the other side and then the 16 correct values for what you want each channel to do.

I then spent a solid 20 minutes searching for the channel that controlled the small rear sidemarkers, only to find out that unlike the A6, it's on the same circuit as the parking/position light (or rear DRL as I've coded it). So, the red sidemarkers have to stay :/

Oh well it was a fun way to spend an hour in the garage if you ask me! And a hell of a way to introduce myself to the ross-tech cable!!

Or maybe flip it around and have the T be the brake and the smaller lower light be the turn indicator?? ??

It's late, I should clearly go to bed.

I have a euro spec 2015 model, do you need me to get any codes from mine to help you set it up?

kudos for making the effort. I like the turn signals separate from the brakes also. But in the end, I figured I couldn't see it from where I sat.

I believe those are connected to the light pipe (op can you confirm?)

Yes, they are. There's no way to turn off the side marker separately.

The US lights are wired differently inside the light itself. The only way to get the euro look is to buy euro lights. You get amber turn signals when you do that, so it's an added win IMHO.

I tried to open up a set of US lights to mod them, but couldn't find a way to re-assemble them without ruining the lenses. It sucks, because the circuit board work is cake.

Thanks James - yes could you please get the values for channels 195 & 196 and 201 & 202? They're in module 46, security code you can use is 16017. I have a hunch they're going to show 5 & 37 and 12 & 44 as the values, respectively - reaffirming my fear that I'm SOL and the US spec lower and upper clusters are wired together.

Nope as per my first post, the rear sidemarker is on the same circuit as the rear position light - total bummer. The A6 has them separated so it'd be a snap to turn them off.

Thanks man! lol yeah at the end of the day I won't be looking at them ever - but I still want them to look cool and "different" from the rest of the US spec cars around Seattle!

Ahh I was hoping opening them up and rewiring would be an option...

The taillight housing is ABS plastic.

    The lens is polycarbonate.

From what I've researched, the best way to bond the two plastics is with Cyanoacrylate. AKA superglue. The problem is, this leads to severe hazing on the inside of the lenses as the superglue dries. I even tried some high end artistic superglue, and a vacuum source while it was curing, and it still hazed. Also, the joint around the edge of the lens didn't look half as good as the factory effort.

There may be a way to do it cleanly, but I don't know that method. I do know from experience that just buying EU/ROW spec lights from the beginning is way more effective.

Is cutting an access hole in the back of the housing a possibility? (To avoid messing with the lens joint)

It'd have to be a pretty big hole.

I started cutting into my ruined light just to see what it would take to split the body apart. I need to finish it up.
