    Need advice!

Hoping one of the smart B6 S4 guys or anyone else that may be able to answer a question for me. I have the following codes for a vag scan today and want to know if the are related or separate issues and how serious? The engine runs fine and the temp gauge is normal when fully warm.

Looks like I in for a engine mount change as well.

I am referring to the codes in addresses: 01 & 17 (the others I am aware of and will deal with shortly.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions guys (or gals).

The green four pin engine coolant temperature sensor is actually two sensors in one. One sensor is for the ECU and the other is for the instrument cluster. If the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster works then I would clear the fault code and see if it comes back after like 500 miles.

Does look like you need new engine mounts though.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy, I know you are well respected on here so I appreciate your advice. I have cleared the codes once or twice and this one returns once in a while (not every time) but did just recently appear for the first time about a month ago. The temp guage however has never went past half way and the coolant is fine.

Yeah, I need to replace the mounts, would you say one or the other is better of these two if you have an opinion? 034 Motorsport Billet or the 034 regular rubber type. Both need the resister but I was curious, I don't want a real hardh ride, stock is fine or maybe a little stiffer is okay too but it is a daily driver so I want some civility out of it. My Shelby is for the real fun! Ha

I'm curious about this as well, for both my B6 and my B5. I was planning on the regular rubber ones but if the motorsport ones aren't too harsh, they might be the better buy.

    Thank you for the compliment!

In that case I would do a few things with your vagcom real fast just to check. Go into the 17 - instrument cluster and do an output test to see if the gauge needles sweep correctly. Then go into the measuring value blocks of the instrument cluster (I forget the specific channel number but it isn't that far in) to find the engine coolant temperature reading, then go into 01 - engine electronics MVB channel 1 to compare the engine coolant temperature sensor readings. If the readings aren't close then I would replace the engine coolant temperature sensor, o-ring, and C-clip.

If you daily drive your S4 then I would go with the 034 Motorsport density line/rubber street density line engine mounts. They are cheap (when compared to the other options), they work, and what more do you have to ask for. A bunch of the local B6/7 S4 guys around me run those mounts and they like them a lot. Currently I have the 034 Motorsport Billet Motorsports line engine mounts with 10 mm studs. I am kind of desensitized to vibrations so I don't notice the vibrations from those mounts and the rest of the solid mounts in my car very much but other people that ride in my car complain about how rough my car is. Usually my passengers complain most about the drivetrain vibrations while I am sitting at idle at a traffic light. These V8s do run rather smoothly though so you can get away with a stiffer rubber mount like the track density rubber mounts if you really want to but most people don't bother for daily driving.

The 2.7Ts are not as smooth running as these V8s so I would definitely recommend a street density engine mount setup. My C5 A6 2.7T 6MT has the 034 Motorsport snub mount with zero clearance bracket and JHM bolt/spacer kit along with the rubber street density engine and transmission mounts. I also had the DTS bar installed for a little bit too but it felt way too stiff and there was a noticeable vibration as long as the engine was running so I took it off. It also had clearance issues with my rear O2 sensors because I have the 034 Motorsports 3" downpipes with high flow cats.

Good info, thanks. I grabbed a DTS bar from AWE back during some holiday sale but I haven't finished my B5 build yet so I haven't driven with it on. Sounds like street density is the way to go for that project.
