Do piggyback tunes leave any trace of the tune? Risk of TD1?

Do piggybacks such as JB1 or Neuspeed's Power Module leave any trace of a tune being installed? Any risk of getting flagged, after removing it?

As opposed to ECU flash tuning.

    Thanks!

    C'mon man.
    Youre a veteran member.. lol

The idea, is that there is no TD1 flagging with piggybacks, because the computer is not being reflashed. The data coming into the computer, gets managed/rerouted to the piggyback, then back to the computer, thus allowing for alternate control of the data without having to have a full flash. This data is limited, as it only control a few parameters (air, boost, fuel), rather than the entire list of parameters that the ECU controls.
Yes, ECU is better for a tune, but risk of TD1 is present.

    Your risk and decision!.

Ha! Touche. Try me on suspension and chassis ;-)

    Thank you.

There was a thread suggesting that piggybacks leave some sort of detectable bread crumbs, which is why I wanted to double-check. Sounded incorrect, but you never know with new dealer tech, etc.

Yes they do as a matter of fact I look at the VCDS scans all the time and there were some sensor errors, no CEI light but nevertheless some OOS errors stored on the ECU.

Clear everything before going to dealer.

This is why I am most likely switching to Unnitronic DIY.

This is what I did on my old 335i, with JB4. Had built-in functionality to clear codes. Thanks for reminder.

There is a TD1 and then there is sensor codes that are out of range.
Obviously, the car will run higher boost, higher fuel pressures and more air. Those sensors will probably be triggered due to an exceeded threshold that gets setup by Audi (I am guessing). But no TD1 gets flagged. You easily can erase the codes, or triggers, and take it on the dealership. Knowing that you have removed the piggyback of course..

Currently a TD1 only gets automatically triggered if unauthorised SW is detected. This does not included flash counters, DCT codes. Dealerships can manually raise TD1 too.

TD1 does not occur on Piggybacks that are removed nor on cars that were flashed and returned to stock software. Plenty of people flash cars back to stock and have no issues.

No matter what you do to a car, you run the risk of a warranty issue but that is the nature of the game. We have all our cars modded and would suggest not modding if you are really concerned. Than you can always mod after your warranty expires. As if your car does have issues they can still run analysis and find the car was experiencing conditions outside normal conditions as a result of higher boost etc.

Do piggyback tunes leave any trace of the tune? Risk of TD1?

It's funny how different some dealerships are with being tuner friendly. I went to look at a Q5 TDI that was advertised to be on the lot but wasn't so the salesman let me drive a 2.0t. I wasn't impressed with its performance and let him know. He replied, "We can always have our APR guy throw a tune on it for you. " That just blew me away because I had assumed all dealerships were not tuner friendly. I do wonder how they would handle the TD1 thing considering it would have been a dealer mod?

Is there more than one way to clear codes? What is the best way?

Well, that's good to know. Guess I'll make sure I clear codes.

I wonder if they've actually added a way for the ECU to permanently store some binary value that detects overboost and other codes associated with piggybacks, or if they just have a scan that can identify those patterns automatically?

This image has been all over, and causing a bit of a stir. It is most likely photoshopped. It has a January 2016 date, but nobody has been able to find it in the ELSA system or is aware of it in any dealership.

Until someone can validate this, we should be cautious.
