    B8.5 Oil Consumption

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Picked up a B8.5 A4 few months ago at about 58K kilometres and the oil reading on the MMI was a somewhat above half with the reading saying "Oil Level ok". I'm currently at 62K kilometres and the MMI is completely empty and the reading just says "Oil Level". I purchased a B8.5 over a B8 mainly after hearing about the terrible oil consumption on the older models. I've went through most of the B8 oil consumption thread but couldn't find much about the B8.5. Is there anything I should worry about or is this also an issue with the B8.5. I've spoke with a couple Audi owners and they've been telling me I shouldn't worry until the Oil light actually pops up, but I turned on the car to just accessories and didn't see no Oil light light up, does it show a message instead? I've driven about 300KM's since it's been empty and still no message. Also since we're on this topic what type of Oil does everyone use? I'm looking at Castrol Edge 5W-40.

    Thanks in advance

So you went 2.5k miles and used some oil? I'm 99% sure your car is fine, our B8 would go only about 850miles from full to empty (it had to get the rings replaced). 2.5k to only use up half the oil doesn't sound crazy to me at all.

I would invest in an oil dip stick to be 100% sure on your oil level. The distance you've driven and had to add oil doesn't sound odd to me, but then again I have a B8 going 900 mile per quart of oil.

You're fine. 4000 kilometers and burned some is not bad. i went about 8000 miles and burned from full to empty and that's normal. if you were burning a quart every 500 miles that'd be a different story

This also depends on which oil you're running in your car as well. Do you know what kind of oil it is?

    2013: I burn about 1 quart over 10k miles.

If your oil reads "empty" in the MMI, that means you're down a quart. Get some Castrol 5-40, make sure it's VW spec 502 (look it up in manual), and pour in half. See how oil reads. Pour in rest if you've got room.

New to this whole mmi digital oil reading stuff. If I knew I about the dipstick I would have tried to get it thrown in when I bought the car

The manual calls for 4.9 quarts. I presume most people who DIY and most shops just dump 5 qts in. There's a reason Audi states 4.9 qts, so I fill a 3 oz container and then pour the rest (4.9 qts) into the engine. Overfilling engine oil is never a good thing.

We purchased the car new in late-July 2013, and I've done an oil & filter change every ~3,000 miles using Mobil 1 0W-40. The oil level gauge never moves between oil changes and the car drives as nice now as when it was new. Current mileage is 33,000.

I should add, this is the easiest oil change of any car I've ever worked on, and I've always performed my own maintenance.

Is the Mobil One to Audi/VW spec?
Every 3,000 miles on changes? You must need your money.

Not sure what that means, but I have no issue spending $20 for a 5-qt jug, $10 for an Audi filter, and 30 minutes of my time every 3,000 miles to give it a fresh fill.

Yes, the oil meets Audi's specifications.

What I was saying, is doing oil changes every 3k miles in today's vehicles is really unnecessary unless you track everyday.

The every 3k oil change is really a waste of money anymore.

But, it's your car and your money ---- wish you many happy miles.
