I heard on the radio this morning that Volkswagen and Audi are now recalling certain cars with airbags and I recall hearing at least the 2009-2014 A6's.

Yep. This affects some 2012-2013 A6s and A7s. I got my letter in the mail last week. My dealer is waiting on parts.

    /-/-/-/-/-/

    From the NHTSA Site:

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Audi A6 vehicles manufactured March 28, 2011, to March 25, 2013, and 2012-2013 Audi A7 vehicles manufactured January 25, 2011, to March 19, 2013. In vehicles with heated and cooled seats, the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS), used to enable the front passenger air bags, may malfunction and prevent the passenger-side air bags from deploying in a crash.

    CONSEQUENCE:
An air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of occupant injury in a crash.

    REMEDY:
Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will install a PODS system repair kit, free of charge. The recall begin on February 5, 2016. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 74D1.

    From AoA Site:

    Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS)
    REPAIR NEEDED

    START DATE
    Dec 18, 2015

    AUDI ACTION CODE
    74D1

    DESCRIPTION
In affected vehicles with climate control seats (heated/cooled), the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) control module can malfunction due to stress/wear factors affecting an internal connector and/or a body-sensing mat in the seat. Should a malfunction occur, vehicle occupants will be alerted of a PODS system problem by illumination of the airbag monitoring light and by the status of the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator light. In this situation, a front passenger seat occupant risks injury in a crash because a malfunctioning PODS system may not make the correct airbag deployment decision for the type of occupant seated there.

    NHTSA RECALL NUMBER
    15V823000

    REMEDY
Install a PODS system repair kit.

Nothing wrong with the airbag, its the passenger sensor that malfunctions. So there is potential that the system wont pick up on the passengers weight therefore causing the airbag to not deploy.

I also received the letter, it states that the heated/cooled seats are the only ones affected.

I think there is a new issue. The same airbags that were recalled by other car makers due to faulty bags.

See below, no C7's on the list:

There are also 170,000 Audi vehicles with the SDI and PSDI-5 inflators in the US, but there are no reports of the parts rupturing in the company's models. The affected products are:

    2005-2013 A3
    2006-2009 A4 Cabrio
    2009-2012 Q5
    2010-2011 A5 Cabrio

VW and Audi are still working to identify the specific VINs for these vehicles. Afterwards, they will notify affected owners.

I can add my 2 cents:

I have a 13 A6 Prestige. There is a recall on my car for the passenger side airbag. This was confirmed by my dealership. My dealer said they haven't received instructions yet on how to do the recall, and that they will contact me once they have the instructions.

2 different discussions; The Takata recall announced last week and yesterday is for the actual airbag unit (driver's side on several models, but not C7's - Letters will be sent once VINs are verified). The reason is that the airbag units have exploded on deployment, creating flying shrapnel and resulting in both injury and death.

I also got the recall letter for my A7 (announced in December), but it is not for the airbag unit, it is for the PODS (sensor in the passenger seat), hence the reason it only applies to MY12-13 C7 Prestige models with ventilated cushions. The reason is that the sensor may fail, causing the passenger airbag not to deploy when it should. My appointment is on Monday. Details are posted above:

Just got my letter yesterday. It's definitely the PODS module that is reason for the recall on C7s as Chris stated.
