    Fuel Efficiency... Lets talk MPG!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So browsing through a few threads I stumbled upon a post where someone claimed to get 32-34mpg on the highway.

Is this a one off car??? Because the best Ive gotten is like 26-27 on pureee highway driving and at like 70mph constantly.

With my E40mix I get about 15mpg on avg.

I couldnt care less about mpg... But if I ever do a long road trip it would be cool to understand how someone can get 32-34mpg!!!!

Cruise control set on 80, I get ~400mi/tank.

Mix of around town and highway? About 14-17mpg.

I make frequent drives to dc which is roughly 4 hours and 95% hwy. Ive never gotten more than 27mpg for an average. Though this is using the cars trip computer. One way is roughly 270 miles and takes 3/4 of a tank. Using those numbers average drops to 22.5mpg

If you cruise like a zombie in 6th (or 7th) gear at 55-65 mph you will get around 28-30 mpg. The problem is that this car begs to be driven so it's hard to stay in that sweet spot (and the speed of traffic is usually higher anyway). All of that requires more throttle (and more gas). Nothing's wrong with your car, that's just how it is

The best I've gotten in 4 years of ownership with plenty of 100% highway road trips is 24mpg. Maybe if I stuck to 70 on those trips I'd get better results LOL. The only reason I track mpg's is that it's a good health check for the car.
I average 18mpg (mostly city including city highway driving)

Out of 126 B8 S4's being tracked on Fuelly.com (with is well over 2M miles being tracked), the best average mpg is 25 with only 6 vehicles attaining that.
Most vehicles being tracked are averating between 18-22mpg. There are several that have gotten a best all time fill-up mpg in the 30's... so it can be done...

I suspect it's a one-off situation. It could've been the perfect stoichiometric conditions. I average about 27mpg on the highway.

The only way to drive for MPG is putting spare on... Otherwise it's too tempting.

The car can get great mileage on pure highway drives. Add a stop sign or street light to the mix and little elves come in and siphon gas out.

    1. Pure highway on a full tank can reach 380-415mpg.
    2. Mixed driving: 250-280mpg
    3. Running 1/4 passes to the grocery store: 175-200mpg

On my previous 11 S4' the night I first installed my Roc-Euro I got 36 MPG on the digital reader, and manually calculated to about 34.5. Couldn't believe it. Continuously would hit that mark if I maintained 70mph/110kph speed. Seemed to be the sweet spot.

Haven't come close to that on my 16' - 29 is the best I've seen on a pure HWY run averaging the same speed. Haven't re-installed the Roc-Euro yet so curious if the same will happen again.

Have had my car 2 months, 2011 with the 6MT. I think I lose some top end not having a 7th gear, as when i compare to my buddy's DCT, the RPM are about 7-800 higher at cruising speed. I have a 20 mile, one way commute to work every day, and 17 of that is highway. For the 3 miles off the hwy, there are 3-5 spots that beg to have hard accelerations.

I've been able to average right around 20-21mpg. For the first few weeks, it was more like 17. I haven't been able to stretch a tank beyond 270mi.

Does it seem like when the car gets to about 1/4 tank, that you can just watch it drop as you drive from there? Not sure if its just a wonky sensor, but I hit 1/4 tank, within miles the car is telling me I'm about to run out of fuel. I end up putting in around 14 gal, but I read in the manual that it has a 17 gal tank. Is the system just overly sensitive to prevent you from running out of gas?

When my gas light turns on I only fill up around 12.5 gallons....by that time I'm usually just at 300 or so miles. Comes out to about 24MPG, but this is DSG with 20 mile one way commute with 18 miles of 70mph cruise control. The remaining 2 miles are 45mph city limits with 2 lights on each end that usually stay green.

I average about 18.5 for my short commute to work. The car is barely warmed up by the time I get to work, so poor mpg is expected. Best was 23 for an all freeway drive.

all stock here. my drive from Atlanta back to central NC when I bought the car netted me 32mpg on the screen (reset before I left). my normal commute which is several stops, hills, some slow areas, and a couple 60mph zones averages 23mpg. I have not reset the long term count for a long long time and its saying i'm averaging 21.8mpg. I'm not super hard, not super easy. 6mt if it matters

all stock here. my drive from Atlanta back to central NC when I bought the car netted me 32mpg on the screen (reset before I left). my normal commute which is several stops, hills, some slow areas, and a couple 60mph zones averages 23mpg. I have not reset the long term count for a long long time and its saying i'm averaging 21.8mpg. I'm not super hard, not super easy. 6mt if it matters
you need to figure mileage at fill up. I get 17 mpg in winter short haul city driving . About 18-20 rest of year , city. Only long trip has been 26.7 driving between 70-80 mph. with one stretch of 10 miles stop & go.

    1. Pure highway on a full tank can reach 380-415mpg.
    2. Mixed driving: 250-280mpg
    3. Running 1/4 passes to the grocery store: 175-200mpg
You mean miles per tank right?

Like someone else said, I mainly do it to benchmark the car and monitor for drastic changes that could point towards an issue.

I drive 70%-80% city and average between 19 and 22 mpg so far this winter. Running 2.5-3 gallons E85 in the summer, I was getting 16-19 mpg. All of this manually calculated. Never trust the car on this one.

Dang i am in the market for a B8.5 S4 soon to add to my stable. And these city numbers aren't THAT much better than my 4.2, if i am not bouncing the RPM's to the max lol . Currently have a 2010 S5 with a 4.2, i guess i can't use that excuse anymore about how the V6 Supercharged will be MUCH better on gas. These are a lot closer than i thought they would be to my 4.2L. The B8 S5 gets pretty good gas mileage as a V8 if you aren't cranking it actually, especially highway.

But that's ok Shhh, keep the lie a lie as far as using the "better gas mileage" towards the lady!!!!

With a weak foot around town i can easily get 17 mpg.

epl stage 1 software plus dsg software, and here in hilly trafficy Norcal with weak sauce gas, I am only getting around 17 MPG on average. Have not done an extended highway only trip yet, but seem to be getting around 24MPG on the freeway at 70-75 MPH. I only averaged 18 MPG in my B6 A4 though, and this car is heavier and has twice the horsepower, so not that bad. I wish it had a bigger tank though, like my son's older Mercedes does. he has like a 17.5 gallon tank.

new cars also tend to run tighter until about 10-15k then loosen up a bit after that.

Currently getting 18.6mpg, 15 minute commute to work mostly free way, 15 miles there and back or so, mixed in with a little city driving as I come off the freeway. ~230-250 miles per tank.

I suspect in the summer it'll go up to ~21 or so.

    My wife's Q5 TDI is a constant 29mpg w/34 on long trips. ~ 500-600 miles per tank.
