    Supercharger gets confused upon WOT

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone experience stupid behavior when smashing the gas pedal at highway speeds (or even moderate speeds) and having the supercharger/trans/whatever hiccup or bog before taking off? Every once in a while it's not super smooth and worries me. What the hell?! Pls share your thoughts.

You probably mean your DSG gets confused.....it's not the supercharger!

for a 6MT, you would just blip throttle/rev match downshift and off you go.. for your AI controlled shifting (DSG), have you tried intervening by paddling down from D7/S6 instead of just going WOT / mashing pedal and waiting for TCU to decide which gear?

    Yup. You right.

Important question: Does either an APR Stage 1 or a DSG Tune correct this?

I swear to God, sometimes I feel like the DSG is chocking on something and then it comes to its wits. Definitely loss of power and precious seconds and embarrassment if I have passengers. Thankfully 99.8% of time it's only me enjoying the car tho.

A DSG tune might fix this, an ECU tune won't.

Good suggestion. No, I haven't tried playing around with the paddle shifters; I'll have to give that a shot. I'm just used to flooring the pedal, hearing the RPMs shoot up, and then taking off. But then again, this is my first supercharger car so maybe my expectations are different coming from a 4.2L V8 S4 or a Turbo :)

As others have said, this is likely just the transmission. If you are flooring it then you are probably hitting the kickdown and I suspect that is going to be pretty much any trans that has a kickdown. What happnes if you just floor it 95% of the way? Were the other cars you are comparing to also auto? Although depending on what turbo car you are referring to, at least you aren't getting turbo lag on top of the auto hesitation.

If you are just cruising along in D and then go WOT, the transmission has to downshift up to 5 gears to give you the requested acceleration. That can take a second or two for the mechatronic to re-jiggle the gears. It's worth repeating that the DSG is two automated manual transmissions mated together, complete with two clutches. IMHO, you'll start enjoying it much more the moment you wrap your brain around that fact and start driving it more like a manual transmission and less like an automatic, using the automatic modes for convenience only. That includes manually downshifting to the proper gear before getting on the throttle or manually holding the right gear for a corner, or keeping it in manual mode on the highway so it stays in the gear you've selected even if you go WOT to pass somebody. For example on the highway I only put it in D if I'm stuck in traffic or have cruise control engaged.

    this happened to me tonight.

I was cruising home minding my own business, when a WRX came up and fly-by'd me. at the next light we ran from a dig and I had him all the way to 70 he was maybe 1/4 mile behind me. next light we ran again from a dig, and seemed like the car choked up a bit (not fuel cut) and simply wouldn't go.

See? That's the problem I'm talking about. I'm glad you were able to confirm. The part that is worrying me is that you are Stage 2 AND you have the TCU Tune, so this should never ever happen.

APR, if you are reading this, do you have any explanation as to why the ECU is doing this? I wouldn't imagine it's a traction control thing. If you have any thoughts, that would be great.

Yes it most definitely does. In any event, I'm 90% of the time in (S)port mode. I only drive in D mode on 25MPH roads or in bumper to bumper traffic so that I don't accidentally ram the guy in front of me.

I honestly have to reshift the way I think about driving this car. It's my first dual clutch trans (I love the auto rev downshift feature) so I agree I have to break away from the style I've used riving cars all my life lol.

Sorry for all the individual posts...I just realized I should have done a multi-quote.
I took your advice this morning, and........95% of the way without the kickdown is MUCH smoother indeed! Honestly, to me, it does the same thing. Why does anyone want to use the kickdown for? Super aggressiveness? I found that 95% of the throttle does the same thing, the car takes off, and there doesn't appear to be any hesitation. On my ride home tonight (if it doesn't snow too bad) I'm gonna try back to back to back 95% throttle runs to see if the smoothness is consistent each time. If so, i'll just stick to that.....or, just mentally learn to click down the left paddle 3 times first before flooring the gas pedal. We'll see.

You are hitting the detent. You are literally flooring the throttle, so yes, it is likely designed to be "super aggressive".

I drive in manual mode with the paddles 99% of the time and have found that just dropping to 5th on the highway provides more than enough oomph to pass in most situations. I am coming from 10+ years of driving a manual, so quickly tapping paddles is a complete no-brainer.

I would have sold the S4 if "D" or "S" were the only options; they are equally bad in different ways.

So at when cruising on an open highway you'd be in S? Do you manually shift to 7th gear?

Try resetting your ECU and then driving it hard for a few days. That helped mine. Honestly though, just use the paddles to down shift, just like you would with a manual

I agree with you 100%. Both D and S suck in different ways. I wonder if the APR TCU remapping tune fixes this and gives you a more superior SPORT feeling. But the manual mode feels so different and strong all the time, but the "downside" is that you have to remember to 'shift' all the time :)

Yes, that is correct. No manual shifting.

When in manual mode, first mash down on the pedal and hit the downshift paddle once and you will automatically go down to the lowest gear possible.

You are thinking of the BMW DCT, which works like you describe. The Audi DSG has a switch at the end of the throttle pedal, once you stump the pedal past the point of resistance and trigger that switch, then it downshifts to the lowest possible gear in manual mode.

This was very helpful. I've never driven a manual before, and I spend way too much time in D to be honest. I get nervous driving around 5000, because it gets a little touchy. Do you have any more tips for driving it like a manual? I've decided to throw MPGs out the window since I'm realizing more and more I'm not using this car to its full potential and mostly enjoying a few pulls from 50-75 here and there.

Isn't that just the normal kickdown that all cars have? In sport mode I think mine drops down to the lowest gear possible, but in comfort or auto mode it usually just drops a gear or two. I'll have to wait for the snowfall to clear before I can safely try this though.

No kickdown in S and D comes much sooner on the DSG. It kicks down if you give it enough throttle. Yes in traditional automatics that switch is used to kick down the transmission in auto mode, but the S-tronic works differently.

Well, my tip would be learn to drive a manual transmission and then apply those learnings. I think DCTs are more popular among Europeans like me, because we learn to drive on manual transmissions first and usually hone those skills over a few years and we view the DCT as an evolution of the manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic transmission for daily driving comfort in GT cars.

As others said, you need to drive it like you would a manual. If you don't know how to drive a manual I'm going to guess you were raised by 2 women?

I've decided to throw MPGs out the window since I'm realizing more and more I'm not using this car to its full potential and mostly enjoying a few pulls from 50-75 here and there.

How's your MPG when you don't ever use 7th gear?

Does it not go into 7th for you in Dynamic/S? It'll shift into 7th around 62mph for me.

I don't understand the question. He asked me "So at when cruising on an open highway you'd be in S? Do you manually shift to 7th gear?" If I'm in S mode, how can I be in manual (stick to the right) mode at the same time? This is why I said to him I don't manually shift. It's automatically shifting.

I honestly have no idea about MPG. I don't know why people keep asking me when they see me "what is your MPG?" who looks or tracks that? All I know is that I'm at the gas station every 3 days or so and I have a 60 mile round trip commute each day, so I'm guessing my MPG sucks pretty badly lol

You can still use the paddles in S and D to override the transmission. Most of it is temporary as it reverts back to the automatic program after a while. However, what he is getting at is that in S the transmission only shift up to 6th gear at least on MY2013+ and never goes into 7th. However, you can force it into 7th by tapping the upshift paddle and it stays there until it needs to downshift again.

You can manually shift the car using the paddles while in either "D" or "S"; the DIS will show the gear and then eventually revert to showing "D" or "S". This has happened to me a couple times when I forgot to put it in manual mode.

You can also put the car in "S" and then put it in manual mode. The car feels more responsive, but that could be the placebo effect.

I have not used "S + Auto" in a while, but I am pretty sure my 2015 S4 will not shift into 7th gear on its own in that configuration. Earlier DSGs might be different in that department.

Yep, if in Dynamic/S and you switch to manual mode, it retains whatever mode you were in. There is a noticeable difference in throttle response if I was in Dynamic/manual vs auto or comfort/manual. In B8s, it does shift to 7th...I guess it is different in B8.5s. I haven't driven a B8.5 S Tronic yet.

This is what I meant - and I was wondering the MPG implications of not using 7th gear.

I agree with using the paddles and drive it like a manual. Also coming from last ten years of daily driving manual helps. At first I wasn't really using the paddles and the car was pretty boring. Once you get comfortable choosing the gears to suit how you're driving (rather than let the computer decide) the car performs much better and the fun factor increases.
