My 2010 Avant with 3.0T needs new engine. Uggggh!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So saga started last Friday when my wife calls and says the vehicle is "shaking". I go to check it out and it is obviously misfiring. No problem I say....I happen to have a set of coil packs and plugs I was going to drop in it. When pulling the plugs, #2 is oil fouled, hmmmmm....I decide it is maybe from the misfire. Change everything out and it is still misfiring. Decide maybe something much worse is going on and take it to my indy. He calls yesterday and says the exhaust valve broke off in #2 and the cylinder is wrecked! WTF! Engine has 134K but well maintained and mainly driven by my wife to work. Quote to drop a used engine in it is $8-$10k depending on engine price. Sick to my stomach as I contemplate what to do. Seriously considering selling it at a loss and bailing as I don't think I have the stomach for this. Anybody interested in a gorgeous 2010 A6 Avant Prestige with Factory Sport Suspension? Thanks for listening....

Sorry to hear about your engine. I have a 2010 Avant with the 3.0T so this hits close to home.
All I can suggest is give yourself a bit of time to wrap your head around it.

If I didn't already have my C6.5 Avant I might have taken it on.
    Sorry to hear.
I'd love to understand the root cause if you are so inclined.
    What was the maintenance history?
I've only heard of one other 3.0Roots that grenaded on the C6 forum, the B8.5 guys have blown a few I'm sure.

    Wow. What an unlucky failure!

However, there are plenty of engines for sub-$4k. All of the 3.0Ts are essentially interchangeable as I understand it, although some minor accessories (engine mounts, etc) may need to be switched around.

Wow, sorry to hear of the diagnosis. It can be a difficult decision to sell as is or fix it. Instead of a new motor, what about rebuilding this one. I have to imagine that there is a cost savings and, being like 6 million dollar man, built it better, stronger, faster.

you said exhaust valve. any chance the indy got that wrong and it was an intake? How did he confirm this?
wild speculation: in need of carbon clean, intake valve is actually restricted from closing due to buildup, piston nears TDC, bends just the one sticking valve, eventually breaking it.....

Thanks, looks like I found a local buyer so I am going to move on. Out of pocket costs would be too much to fix it.

I posted it on autotrader.com....you can see some pics there and I have some others if you PM me. It is immaculate, except for some minor exterior scratches.

Maybe, he did scope and I looked as well. Couldn't tell what valve it was, would make sense though. I guess carbon could have been an issue but I haven't heard of these engines getting so bad as leading to this.

I bought this off lease from an Audi dealer 3 years ago. I do all my own oil changes and have used Shell Rotella T religiously. It started to use a quart of oil between oil changes the last couple of changes but from what I can tell that isn't unusual for a 134k 3.0T. Not a single other problem ahead of this.

Why PM? Why don't you just post your solution here for the OP and anyone else who's having a similar issue?

Wow! So you recommend the OP commit insurance fraud...but that doesn't quite work with your earlier statement of "Dude pm me quick I got a solution that won't cost you", since that could cost him felony conviction.

Funny replies. Never heard of a "Chop Shop" before? Listen buddy when you are down $10,000 in the hole you do what you have to do and get yourself out. If you knew about the chop shop business you would understand. Speaking the truth anyone would think about getting rid of the car to not lose $10,000.... he also wouldn't be doing it himself yet get anything in return other than the value. ..... the idiot who commented after you would get caught. ......

The reality is that you buy a car, which has a fixed useful life associated with it, if the car goes bad you can fix it or scrap it. Heck, guess we know where your goods will be coming from should you decide to sell items on this forum ;)

I believe the OP, and for that matter most everyone else on this forum, is going to real weary of taking much advice from you.

Listen buddy, I'm not here to argue with you nor with anyone else. I threw my 2 cents in and that is all, take the advice or leave it. I don't need to sell parts on forums to make a living buddy. I just suggested something that a lot of people would do if they knew about it and how easy it was. Have a great weekend my friend.

Great job in calling people both "idiot" and "friend" in the back-to-back posts. You advocated a potential federal crime and then stated how you are "in the know" about chop-shops and such. Guess what a lot of people could go rob a bank as well, but few people do due to it being a crime and something that socially/morally is not advocated.

Read carefully everyone learned how to use their finger and follow the words. Call a lawyer and a officer and if you want give them my info. Did you really just compare "Robbing a bank" and "Parting out a car in a shop"??

It is a crime, a lot of things you do are crimes. Listen man honestly just stop enough arguing. Nobody needs to hear, if you have something to say send a private message. I am not a criminal, I just have a lot of knowledge about this from people who were and still are. Bye again buddy.
