    Hey all,

Started having a problem few days ago, car started popping out of third gear, now it does it on reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th. Any ideas? Searched and i cant seem to find much, guessing linkage or tranny mount.

Synchros is my guess. Time for a rebuild

Has the shifter ever been changed or messed with? Clutch/tranny been removed? It's possible the shifter needs re-aligned, but it's also very possible the synchros are starting to fail as mentioned above.
Look up JHM's shifter alignment video, it's very helpful, you'll need an angle finder tool.

Check your shifter alignment before looking into a transmission rebuild. You don't NEED an angle finder tool. I installed my short shifter without one. Just keep adjusting it until you can get it into all gears. If your shifter still pops out while driving, then it's most likely a synchro issue.

The angle finder costs like $5...and saves you a ton of guess work.

Just a side note before I start taring into this, rev, first, 3rd and fifth definitely do not go in as far as they used too and 2nd, 4th and 6th go quite a bit further back then before, tranny hasnt been out in almost 2 years now, before i bought the car, i would like for it to last until summer, new audi and vr6 swap is going in the ol girl.

the only thing that holds the gears in place are the detents...they work around the collars to hold it in gear, i'd say detents are a possibility and since its all the gears that are forward in the pattern and not the gears the correspond with the collars (1-2 3-4 5-6). i'd check there first. before opening it up. detents are cheap. and easy to replace.

So I took her apart to have a look too see if i could adjust it any, no go, it's already at it's max position. Is this normal? It's missing 1/8th of an in to stay in gear.

you're adjusting wrong thing if you're touching top bolt visible in pic. leave it alone, e.g. reset for middle (it is used to move whole shifer assembly forward/backwards for better ergonomics, you have to experiment with what works for you the best) and then align the bottom bolt on rod that moves around when you move the shifter.

You said this: So I took her apart to have a look too see if i could adjust it any, no go, it's already at it's max position. Is this normal? It's missing 1/8th of an in to stay in gear.

This tells me that you're touching wrong bolt.

Again, reset top (black forward bolt in your picture, bolts to static not-moving rod) bolt to middle, fasten it down and then undo bottom bolt (silver, on a rod that moves when you operate shifter) and adjust shifter until you get all gears going in, this is where the angle gauge comes into play.

Yes I have done that, but putting the top bolt to middle pushes the shifter assembly too much forward which doesn't even let any of the top gears engage, doesn't matter how I adjust the second bolt. The PO rebuilt the motor and thats how he had it adjusted when I bought the car, its been the same way for nearly 2 years now never had an issue, I will admit I have been running it hard enough with the snow we've gotten up here.

Again, $5 angle finder and JHM video, you would have been done with this a week ago.
