For myself, being a huge fan of the B5 generation, the reason to build up the car you have is the generation by itself. From B6 on they pretty much only get heavier and bigger. As far as I'm concerned, that's reason enough. While you could certainly spend 7500-10k on a car... I don't think you'd necessarily need to to achieve what you're looking for... Except for when you say reliably. To do that, you'll want to either pay a very well regarded and trusted shop to build the engine and whatnot up for you. If you're not doing the labor yourself, 10k becomes a real possibility.
Here's my question... Is spending 15-20k on a newer car going to get you the 300-400hp your missing? How much newer are you talking about? Do you mean to stay in an Audi/VW and want to have 300-400hp? Or is the market wide open and you want to end up with 300-400hp?
