    Seriously..... Just bought a 05 B6 and then..

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So my b5 had some timing belt issues which caused teeth to jump 13 teeth to the right (TDC lined up on crank)

    So I went out and bought this...

    Now just leaving my lot... Sitting there before leaving actually I hear a nose followed by battery light.. So I quickly shut off the car..


    Sure enough.. Timing belt was loose.. Scanned it no codes came up and pulled all plugs and couldn't see any markings like I could on the b5.

    Do you guys think the engines ok and to buy a timing belt kit?

    Or could there be more?

    So your A4 stalled and you *didn't* immediately hit the key to try and restart it?

    Well, that doesn't necessarily mean the belt is bad. If the battery light came on, I would probably inspect the accessory belt first since that runs the alternator.

    Did you peel the tbelt cover back and actually look at it?

    That looks kind of loose, but according to one of IE's diy videos, the belt should flex 90 degrees while tight.

    I wouldn't get too crazy yet. Do some more inspection first. The belt would probably be a lot worse if it let go while running.

    Mine has been loose like that before. I got scared for a moment since I've been driving it like that, but then I started the car again and double checked it and it was tighter. I'm not sure what that means but I'm still driving it .

    I'll put it this way, if I crank it to inspect it I'm sure shit will get worse. It's too loose for my likings.

    I just want to make sure I caught it in time and have no bent valves.

    Next step is to turn the engine over by hand, check timing. See if it jumped or not.

    But if YOU shut the car off (and it didn't stall itself), that means you're probably just fine and whatever happened very likely had nothing to do with the timing belt. If you are paranoid (and who wouldn't be after a belt failure on another 1.8T), then put a belt kit in it. I'd suggest the new non-hydraulic "Litens" tensioner setup. Good stuff, that.

    I am very paranoid that's for sure, I'm thinking it was a tensioner fail... Shitty thing is I have no choice to take it to a shop cus my b5 is in my driveway and my B6 is in my bottom parking lot. There's a no "mechanics work" policy.

    I swear any time someone buys a used B6, theres always a few issues to be addressed. When I bought my USP. Battery & alternator died in first 2 days lol. Sunroof doesn't work, drivers seat down motor doesn't work. Lol the joys.

    Looks like a really clean White A4! Hopefully you didn't damage the head

    Right, ugh.

    It's super clean, there's a few things that need done to it.. Upper control arms, valve cover gasket.. Either then that... Well. Now this issue. I've only had it 3 days....

    The engine in the video is running. I agree with the above, turn it over by hand and make sure everything is ok. Maybe a compression check after that.

    I know. The engine in the video IS running. If yours sounds just like it, then turn the engine by hand to ensure there is no piston to valve contact. If there isn't I would do a compression check next.

    Well, good news! I saved the B6!! Shop tech called me said you better buy yourself a lotto ticket asap! You caught it in time!! He replaced the belts, checked out the engine and all is good!

    The best way to do that is with a Symphony II+ hu out of a B7 A4. It is setup to connect to an Aux input and has a button on the front to select CD or Aux audio source. In addition, the Sym II+ audio quality is superior to the Sym II.

    My tensioner failed on me couple months ago, same symptoms battery light came on and steering wheel locked up on me. Drove it home with no power steering popped the hood and serpentine belt was just laying in there.

    Ha! That's it? My B6 avant block cracked 3 months after I bought it cost me 4 grand for a replacement engine new timing job all tastes good stuff. Wife almost divorced me over it
