I had some time so I figured I'd post up some info on some common issues with the 4.2 engines.

First is the coolant tube that connects the oil cooler to the engine block. Audi decided to make a plastic connection that deteriorates over time and causes a mystery coolant leak beneath your alternator. The labor to fix it says that the whole engine needs to be pulled. If you've received a quote for over 2k to fix the issue, you're paying too much.... We also use a metal replacement for that coolant tube so you should never have that problem again.

As far as the timing chains go. We are able to look at specific channels with vagcom to get a general idea of the health of your timing chain system. One of the issues you will find with your timing chain system is that the timing adjustment units weren't made of strong enough metal so when the pin goes to try to lock them the adjustment unit still has movement. We replace those with hardened JHM units. It costs half what the dealer charges for new units. Once you have some decent mileage on your 4.2 (over 100k), the whole timing chain system usually has a fair amount of wear, IE: cam gears, adjusters, guides, tensioners and chains. The whole system is fairly complex and I highly recommend having a good shop do the work if your timing system needs service. If you have a 4.2 and you have questions feel free to hit us up.

We do NOT check our audizine account very often so make sure to either call us or message us on facebook.
