In the market for a 2013 S4 and need some advice.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As the title says I'm a current 2007 Audi A4 owner looking to buy a 2013 S4. I've been looking around my area for good deals on a 2013 S4 preferably brilliant black or ibis white. I found one that has caught my attention, it's a 2013 S4 in brilliant black with 63k miles going for $27,899. I'm going this weekend to test drive it and take a look at it in person. Just needed some advice on what to look for in a S4 with this many miles and any other advice I should take into consideration when shopping for a Used 2013 S4. Thanks for the help

Nothing really to look for. Look for unusual wear and tear or evidence car had been in a major accident. If the car is CPO'd , that would be good. Ask if it can be Cpo'd which usually costs $2k. I would be suspicious if the dealer can't CPO the car and would want to know why. Some owners who purchased a used car got screwed because the cat had a tune on it that was not disclosed buy the seller. When it was taken in for service, the warranty was voided when a tune was detected. Audi dealers have also sold cars with tunes. A tuned car cannot be CPO'd unless the dealer reprograms the ECU back to OEM. So they can warranty a car that HAD a tune but was put back to stock.

Let me know your thoughts after you test drive the 2013. I wouldn't be surprised if you absolutely hate the steering after driving your B7.

Perfect that will be the first thing I ask when I go in. I'm pretty sure it is not CPO'd because it would've mentioned it in the post.

Yes it does, which is why I want to check it out. Though a couple months ago an Ibis white sold from a Mercedes dealership around my area as well with the same mileage. 2013 S4's in my area are ranging anywhere from $30-$35,000 but are usually selling at around $31-32,000. This deal though does seem a little to good to be true.

Maybe, but it also has relatively high mileage for a 2013 model year. If it's not CPO and the dealer has it "priced to sell", then I don't think that price is way too far off. But assuming it is in good condition, I would not expect to negotiate any additional discount.

I'd assume prices vary by state/area, too. I was having a really hard time finding a 2013 in my price range over in the Seattle area, but I remember finding many over in Florida.

I used to live in Palm Beach County though, and having bought my previous car in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area, I came across a ton of cheaper cars with body damage and such (which wasn't stated by the owners or dealers). Just be careful!

If you don't want to wait until the weekend, you can call AOA and give them the vin# of the car and they'll tell you if its CPO or not.

I don't think it's registered with AOA as CPO until the purchase if that dealer just did the CPO. If it already was CPO then you should be able to find out.

I missed two S4's last few weeks for around that price even a little lower. One was a very beautiful red one with manual, that was listed for $26 something and was sold 15 minutes before I arrived at the dealership. It had 2 owners and 70K miles. It's a little easier to find automatics. Certified S4's seem to be over $32K.

Have someone looked at this one :

I know it's salvage title, but it was very clean and low miles. No signs of water (I know what to look for). I didn't take it to a shop, but It had some vibrations that concerned me.I reed here these vibrations might be common , but I don't have enough experience with these cars and got scared.

When I bought my used S4, I took a body man with me who knows Audi and other high end cars. Don't rely on Carfax, Autocheck or especially the dealer for accurate damage history.

I'm always leery of buying my cars that are on the lower end of the price scale. Unless there is a regional price difference, or similar price variations, I dont buy the cheapest example I can find.

Not saying I look to spend more than I have to, but I've found you pay one way or the other.

I am not intimately familiar with what our cars go for at this moment because I haven't been following them closely, but it does seem low to me. If it checks out and is truly a clean example more power to ya. If not, it's like anything else why is it cheaper than the market dictates?

The fact that it's a salvaged title automatically turns me off. If you're still interested, first questions I would be asking is "why is it salvaged" with any proof of that (photos of the crash, repairs, etc).

As other members have mentioned, I would be leery about finding the least expensive option. As they mentioned, you will end up paying for it in the end, always.

Also consider what options you want/need on the car. Those are negotiating points as far as price.

Ah ok, did not know that. I assumed that the info got sent to AOA as soon as it was CPO'd since they're the ones who control it.

I only say that because that's how it went with me. It was only listed as cpo through the dealer and not AOA when I called on it. Once I bought about a month later I got info from AOA.

Yea thats strange. It should have been registered with Audi as soon as they did it. At least thats how the representative on the phone made it sound to me when I spoke to them recently.

Yea I know that's what scares me. Now a days you can't even trust a Carfax that a dealership shows you it's scary. I just hope my friend and I, who happens to be an Audi Tech, can take it for a drive and look at it to make sure it's in good condition. At the end of the day I won't mind coughing up so more money for a better taken care of S4.

OP: I suppose it all depending upon how many miles you drive per year, how long you plan to own the car and what your idea of reasonable high mileage ownership costs are. Generally, You might be better off purchasing a car with lower miles and a higher price.

I will be buying a B8 S4 in the Fall. Prices in the Pacific Northwest are a bit high. $28-32k sticker price gets you a Premium Plus or Prestige with 50-60k miles on it. Manuals are going for the same price as automatics. 3rd party warranties can offer equal or greater coverage for less money depending upon how well you negotiate.

I havent completed my pre-purchase research so im not aware of all the common issues associated with this platform. However I will personally be asking the following questions:

    - Consistent and verifiable oil change history?

    - Has all current TSB work been performed?

    - Stock ECU?

    - Clutch condition?

    - Original or replacement water pump?

    - Do paint finish, exterior gaskets & trim pieces indicate the car was garage-kept or lived outside?

    - Will the car pass an indipendent pre-purchase inspection?

    - How long has the car been sitting at the dealership? Why?

    - Is the dealership confident enough in the vehicle that they'll include a warranty at no additional charge.

    - Smokers or Pets?

    - Carfax?

    - Reason behind low asking price? Price-point car? Or problem car?

There was a 2013 white one for sale locally at a dealer for $31,500 with 47k. Thought that was fair being a FL model.

Sounds like a great deal. Check if it's had the 50k service. If it's not at an Audi dealer, get the VIN and any Audi dealer can look up the service history for you.

Many dealers won't submit the paperwork until just before the sale, they'll just make sure that the car conforms to the CPO checklist and list it that way.

It costs them money to CPO, so they want to avoid spending that on the off-chance they can't sell the car and need to off load it to an auction.

The bad part about that is that it doesn't show up on the website as CPO. When I called on mine they assured me it was CPO even though it wasn't listed like that. They actually had 3 cars that were cpo but not listed.

Ah ok. That actually makes sense.

Used CPO 2013 s4's are going for over 38k in my area, with 32k miles which seems like a lot to me. I've been searching too but with no luck.

    My advice is this:
Stay away from the '13's. Worst year for issues of all B8.5's (if not all B8's from 2010). Yeah you may find one that's OK but if you look at stats that's the year to avoid. Notorious for steering issues that will entirely ruin the driving experience.
Stay away from Audi's (including S4's) with that many miles (60k+ plus). I'd suggest finding one in the 35k and less range. For the $$ more you will spend it's worth finding the right one...
Stay away from DSG on such a high mile S4. Only get a DSG if it's CPO'd.

I tell you this from experience and from what I've seen with personal friends and read on the forums.

I'd also be a bit skeptical with such a low priced S4... Something seems off.

I would argue pre 13 are the worse, look at the Dsg failures. 13 has the steering issues, which most have been fixed by now, but also has better DSG and looks much better.

Same here... My 13 has been bullet proof. I haven't done a crazy amount to mine, but have never brought it to the dealer other than service.
