    S3 Rear Spoiler Installed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I was looking for alternative options to replace the rear spoiler. There are several available on the market, but they are either carbon fiber or black finish. I wanted something that wasn't outrageously big or shouting and definitely in body color. After hours and hours of research I found this: it looked decent enough in the low-res pictures, so I decided to buy one and thought if I don't like, I will just send it back and lose $100 or so on the shipping.

I bought the spoiler on eBay for $150 shipped. This is the primed version (I remember seeing someone installed one of these, but never was able to find the post again). Even though the seller provided more than a month delivery estimate, it arrived after about a week I placed the order. It was very well packaged and the quality seemed just fine. I took it to one of the bodyshops close to me and asked them to inspect everything and refinish if necessary and paint. They asked $200 which I think is reasonable. According to the shop, the primer wasn't well done and they had to re-prime it. Regardless, we installed it today and the end result is very good and the color is spot on. I really like it and all my friends liked, too.

The one I bought looks exactly like this.

    Just sharing :)

EDIT: Added profile and direct-back photos.

Thanks for taking the plunge. Looks good. Car would look even more aggressive with a drop and spacers.

I like it. Did you have to remove the original spoiler or did it install over it?

Yes, the factory spoiler must come off, but it's very easy, they are also using 3M tape for mounting. I just wrapped it and stored in my garage, in case I return the car at the end of the lease, then I will swap them and sell this one.

Think OP answered above, 3M tape or similar. For what it's worth, I think I've seen that it's some sort of adhesive in another thread as well.

Spoilers are attached at factory either by DS tape or glue. Use a heat gun at low temp to warm up the factory spoiler, then start by slipping some floss or fishing line under the side edge. Once you have lifted an inch or so, replace the floss with a microfiber cloth between the spoiler and the lid, working it to and fro. Should come off easily. Make sure you remove all the old take and wipe down with IPA before attaching the new DS tape.

Roadrunner explained the removal perfectly, no holes on the lid, just DS tape. The original spoiler comes off without any deformation or anything.

There is a version on Ebay by the same or similar vendors that is a solid radius vs. the notched version like the above which replicates the factory design. Was thinking about taking the plunge on that version and do some something similar in terms of getting it painted to match etc..

Could you (YegorS) post a pic from directly behind the car vs at an angle?

It's not exactly a replica of the OE spoiler. They used an OE spoiler as a mold and in doing so, the lines of the notch are a bit softer than the OE. I kinda wish the transitions were as crisp as the OE. But I did only pay $250 for it so I can't complain too much.

actually looks pretty clean. I'm in the "less is more" mentality.
the way the trunk still sticks out a little still gives the spoiler effect and that actually looks way better.

The lid without spoiler looks quite good. After removing the factory spoiler, I actually started debating within myself if I should install the larger spoiler at all. Then kind of preferred with the spoiler, it sets apart the car a little more. It's just a personal preference.
