I was wondering I have to move a large item in the Avant and it would stick out about 24".Can I close the hatch partially down and tie it down with a cord.Would it damage the hatch motor?.Can you actually disable the automatic open and close and just manually close the hatch.

You cannot disable the automatic open/close.

Just close the hatch to where you need it, push in the locking mechanism on the hatch and secure your cord through it and the one at the bottom of the gate. When you're done, you should be able to release the locking mechanism on the hatch by automatically opening it. If it doesn't release you can manually release it
