    sunroof, head room problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I have a problem, I tested the Audi s7 without the sunroof, and I liked a lot, I had lot of leg and head room, then I ordered one with the sunroof and now I have very little head room left. I had no idea that the sunroof takes away so much space. Does anybody know Is it possible some-how to remove the mechanics and replace it with the standard sealing?

    Dear person,

While sitting in the drivers seat, reach hand to bottom left of seat. Feel for a horizontal bar that can be depressed. Gently but firmly, press downward on the bar.

Seats are very adjustable like hackdevil said. Also, the sun roof doesnt take the amount of space you are pointing out to. Lastly, you will need a whole new roof! Convertible maybe?

This may be an exciting opportunity for you. You could be the first to have a brand new convertible S7.

As has been pointed out, the most cost effective way to do what you are suggesting is to trade the car in.

Might be easier to cut holes in the floor and lower the seats

Although many of you joke about it... I can see this being a real issue. Most sunroofs take a good 1+" of headroom out of most vehicles, which makes a BIG difference for some people. Some systems take up closer to 1.5-2" (especially in trucks).
Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling with a pig... After a couple hours you realize the pig likes it.

In many cars the sunroof does reduce the head room by 0.5-1 inch.

Yeah I know. 0.5-1" but seats are adjustable enough. My point is that half an inch wont make a difference if you are having trouble already .

Like others have said - I would strongly recommend you ensure you've lowered the seat as much as possible as it does go down quite a bit. If you are still having trouble the only real recourse would be to get a different car.

Anything is possible, but it would not be wise to try and retro-remove a sunroof from these cars. You will lose a lot of value in the car (more than the cost you've paid to add the sunroof). The car will not look as nice, and who knows what kind of problems that would introduce down the road with electrical systems, safety, and comfort.

Best of luck in resolving the problem, and let us know the outcome. Don't forget to share some pictures of the car too.

Nobody's joking about whether a sunroof eats up headroom - of course it does.

The amusement is from the suggestion that it would be in any way practical to remove the sunroof mechanism and replace it with....what? A welded-in steel panel covering the opening and a new headliner???

ANYTHING is possible, of course, with enough $$$$$ thrown at it. Whether that's "practical" or not is a different question altogether....

I'd probably have sat in a car like the one I was ordering before signing the purchase agreement, but that's just me, being practical....

In this situation, I'd recline the seat a bit, extend the power-adjustable steering wheel and deal with it, but I'm not made of $$$$....

Don't laugh at that one, because I had it done. I owned a pair of E21 3 series BMWs way back when. The seats were manual with no lowering function. When I traded the older (no sunroof) for the newer, BMW had stopped importing the non-sunroof examples to the US.

When I first sat in the newer car at the dealership, I got out and told the dealer thanks, but no-thanks -- in my preferred driving position, my head pressed firmly against the steel beam that ran along the left side of the opening. The dealer offered up the following.

In that car, the front seats sat on a steel box that was welded to the chassis. The dealer cut the top off the driver's side box, cut an inch and a half off the sides then welded the top (to which the seat was bolted) back onto the lowered sides.

The seating position was perfect for me and I owned the car for the next 14 years. Absolutely everyone else who drove that car hated it; they felt like they were sitting on the floor -- and they were!
