Don't laugh at that one, because I had it done. I owned a pair of E21 3 series BMWs way back when. The seats were manual with no lowering function. When I traded the older (no sunroof) for the newer, BMW had stopped importing the non-sunroof examples to the US.
When I first sat in the newer car at the dealership, I got out and told the dealer thanks, but no-thanks -- in my preferred driving position, my head pressed firmly against the steel beam that ran along the left side of the opening. The dealer offered up the following.
In that car, the front seats sat on a steel box that was welded to the chassis. The dealer cut the top off the driver's side box, cut an inch and a half off the sides then welded the top (to which the seat was bolted) back onto the lowered sides.
The seating position was perfect for me and I owned the car for the next 14 years. Absolutely everyone else who drove that car hated it; they felt like they were sitting on the floor -- and they were!
