    V8 belt driven motor swap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can a belt driven V8 motor from C5 A6/S6 or D2 S8 S be swapped in a B6 chasis to avoid the timing chain issues that happen with the B6 S4?

    Thanks

Anything is possible, but I think your money would be much better spent by just doing a quality timing service with the mid to high level JHM Kit. Why swap an engine in with older tech that has its own issues outside of the belt vs chain timing difference. Or swap an RS4 motor in ;)

I'd actually like to know this too. Can't be too tough. The Belt V8 is only about 3" longer than the chain version. As as far as issues..it has a leaky oil cooler pipe that's $72 and an afternoon to fix. Can't think of a single other issue..outside of normal maintenance.
Otherwise...it's about the most reliable engine I've ever known. And you can buy 3 of them for the price of doing the chain service.

I'm in the process of doing an RS4 swap, so stay tuned for updates and tips on what I went through. And I'm not doing the labor, but I am involved in sourcing parts and providing tips that I have been picking up from others that have done it. Not for the faint of heart, or wallet, but should end up being an amazing ride.

Everything you said here is spot on. Besides that pipe, the belt driven 4.2 is nearly bulletproof. If it fits nicely, I would almost guarantee that the entire swap would be cheaper than parts alone to service the timing components on the chain driven motor.

    Paging Nollywood.

So what would be needed? I know of two shops that did the chains twice and still failed. One shop put a 2.7TT with Franken Turbo's the other shop rebuilt with new chains and still blew up. Its just that like rollerton said they are bulletproof aside from regular maintenance and oil cooler pipe.

From what I've read about the B6/B7 chassis car the reason they went to the chain driven engine was because the belt driven engine could not be made to fit. 3 inches may not sound a lot but given that the chain driven engine is bloody tight fit as it is I cant see the belt driven one fitting. Bloody shame because this is one of my biggest fears with my car. At moment its sweet as a nut and gets 5k oil changes as a preventative measure. Would certainly be doing the conversion myself if the chains give issue and there was evidence of the belt driven engine being able to made fit.

Well, seems like Nollywood does a 4.2 swap to B5 every few weeks! If the 4.2 goes into the B5 reasonably then it's just up to someone motivated to work out the details- because space isn't the biggest issue. The belt driven V8 is really a very compact engine, people have been putting them in Boxters and other little cars these days.

So, all I need is a car nice enough to be worth it that I don't need to drive. And a Spare V8. And some tools. And more garage space. And a bionic spine. And moar smarter.

    All Over!

    The 077-series Belt-driven V8 engines WILL fit the B6/7.

Sure, Audi designed the 079-series chain-driven V8 engines specifically for the B6 S4, because it's approx. 2.5" shorter than 077 series versions. Not because the earlier V8's won't fit, more due to practical reasons - service space.

I have measured the engine bays of the B5 and B6, from the most protruding section of the firewall, to the lock carrier. Both are close in terms of depth, with the B6 actually having 2" more. The 077-series V8 fits the B5, so the B6 will be okay too.

I am still on the look out for a B6 3.0 Quattro 6MT as a base car for another V8 swap. My spare V8 was destined for my B5 Quattro 2.5 TDI V6 24V, but this is being replaced by a B6. I will update as things get moving. First, I need a base car!

    Great info as always.

I'm a rookie when it comes to v8 swaps. Can the 077-series be bolted up to the 0A3 trans, or is another transmission such as the 01E required?

What power mods are available for the belt-driven V8s? I've been tempted to try an RS6 V8tt swap, but that would cause a black hole in my wallet.

I'm not 100% sure if the 077 bolts up to the 0A3 using ALL bolt holes, but I'll check.

Supercharger, or turbo option, using C5 RS6 internals. Which is the route I'm looking into.

I've got all the rebuild parts from Audi.

I'm just looking for a workshop to rent, to start the work.
