    VCDS Useful Codes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After spending quite a lot of money on the Ross-Tech Hex Net device, I'm left questioning my decision why I did this. I don't see any support for the B8.5 RS5, there are no list of codes or functions that work with this car.
I've done an auto scan and that's seems to be the only function it's any use for?

Is there a list of codes that work for this car or has anyone played with it to find any useful codes? I don't see its purpose at the moment other than to read codes and reset them, something a device less than half its value can do.

Have you replaced an existing VCDS interface?

I have the HEX-USB+CAN and find it useful for recoding/changing adaptation channels in addition to scanning for any fault codes.

From my perspective it 'fully supports' my RS5 (ie majority of modules are mapped from a coding and adaptation channel perspective) and delivers all the functionality I expect of it.

Heres an extensive list that should work for you. Just pay attention to make sure it says that the code will work for 8.5. Take pics or screenshots before you change anything so you can revert back without any mistakes.

It's the HEX NET+ CAN I have and it recognises the modules on the car when it connects, what I haven't found is any support for this model of car, the car doesn't appear in Ross Techs Wiki pages as with most other models so if I come to service the rear brakes for example, there's no instructions on how to motor them open or closed.

I'm just very disappointed in the support for such an expensive device, a code reader is just as much use for a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the link above, I will save that info and see what works.

There's no generic code reader that'll do any of the VW specific codes. It'll just give you your basic, and often useless, OBD2 stuff. It's fun to tweak things on your car, but at the end of the day it's a service and diagnostic tool. If nothing else, it may help keep your dealer or service shop honest if you need to take it in for repairs.

Are you saying that, when you open a module, there's no descriptions of code options shown? Sounds like you need to fully uninstall, and reinstall VCDS. All of the code descriptions are a part of the VCDS installation, and has nothing to do with the cable. If your cable is *correctly* detecting modules in your car but not showing descriptions, then VCDS is broken somehow (permissions issue, installed in 64-bit "Program Files" folder when it should be in the 32-bit - or vice-versa, etc).

If that's not what you're saying, then my bad. Also, for the brake thing, there are generically written articles on the wiki that should guide you. Looking at an S5/S4 brake job, the module is probably the same, so the coding is the same or very similar.

So am I understanding correctly, a video for retracting the brakes on VW Touerag will work exactly the same on the Audi, same codes to type in, etc?

Ok great, I thought it would be different codes for different cars.

I originally bought the Hex-Net to recode the brakes to ceramics but it's proving to be mission impossible finding the correct code.

Is recoding the brakes for RS5 specific to RS5?

I'm really not sure? I'd been informed to change the first two digits of the code from 2C to 30 but this brought up a code error so I switched it back.

This is the coding currently in the ABS unit. Audi just check a box on their computer which tells the car ceramics are fitted and will change the coding.

See if you can find someone with an RS5 with factory ceramics, and see if you can get an auto scan of their ABS module. It'd be preferable to get a scan from the whole car, but you should only need the ABS module.

You might even be able to get by with another RS car that has ceramics and the same ABS module, but it's best to get a car as close to your own as possible.

Try not to be too harsh on Ross Tech. Consider the vast amount of cars they have to support, and the even more vast amount of control module versions and updates. There's no way they could document all of that unless they had official support from VW. Even then it would still be a huge undertaking.

I wish there was a tool even half this good available for Mitsubishi. There are far fewer Mitsu models available that need supporting in the first place, and their cars are way more hacker friendly. And still the best we can get is glorified hobbyist stuff, mostly for the engine.

There is a possibility that some modules equipped on cars do not support options that the car was not equipped with.
i.e. with the B8 A4 halogen to bi-xenon headlight conversion, some halogen equipped cars did not receive a 09-cent electric module that supported the necessary coding changes for the retrofit.

I bought the Carista dongle and app and it supports about 3/4 of the things that Ross-Tech can do.

A quick count seemed to me that it was more than half of what is listed on the A5OC link for the RS5 on Carista so sorry if I over estimated. Results vary by car so it's probably different for your S4. Used it on my coworkers A7 TDI and there were a couple of things that were different on there that weren't on the RS5 which is what both OP and I have. My GTI had the most hidden options available. I'm not saying that Carista is a like for like replacement for Ross-Tech by any means but it does have its advantages by being easier to use and cheaper depending on what OP wants to achieve so it's a viable option. OP's car is not North America spec either so that's probably another thing to take into consideration.

Here is the details of an RS5 with factory fitted carbon ceramics:

    Address 03: ABS Brakes (J104) Labels: 8K0-907-379.clb
    Part No SW: 8T0 907 379 HW: 8T0 907 379
    Component: ESP8 quattro H04 0200
    Revision: -------- Serial number: --------------
    Coding: 306D0A
    Shop #: WSC 06325 000 00000
    VCID: 7F07187EEECF12D9161-802A

    No fault code found.

Note that the ABS module above is a different part number to yours and therefore may accept a coding value that yours does not.

I would try playing around with the coding value, but if it doesn't accept the value I probably wouldn't be losing sleep over it.
