    should i buy this s4?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I found an S4 here in town at a local dealer that I'm interested in. So I took it for a PPI and this is what came up. I need some opinions. Would you buy this car?

    Details
2000 S4 6mt 89K miles Santorin blue with white interior
They want $8800 for the car
    One owner
    No records
    Curbed wheels
Surface scratches and scuff marks down the side, likely parked in a parking garage all its life

Now if I were to buy this car, I would be doing all the labor myself so it would just be the costs of parts. What puts me off the car is the leaking turbo. But at this point, these cars will have pretty much all these problems no matter what. So I'm unsure about what to do at this point. So let me know what you all think. Thanks guys.

$8800 and about $5k with DIY work. Fuck that dude. You can find an immaculate one for 9k from a reputable owner. Spend the extra money to have it shipped across the country if you have to.

This just blew my mind. I am calling joke post because no way anyone would buy this with more then what a stealership is asking in repairs.

Buy my S4 all repairs are done with similar miles and I still wouldnt ask 8800

I would pass on it. The only thing appealing is that its a one owner car. Theres better s4's out there in that price range.

Pass, asking way too much given the amount of work that needs doing. No records...I'm sure it needs a timing belt job as well so just add that to the estimate. Wrong color interior too, unless white leather is your preference.

One owner, and boy did she rag the hell out of it.

second all of the above. project b5's are 4-5k (or even cheaper). you can get a totally clean one for that price, or a base stage 3.

You're paying the premium for the mileage and the dealership. It's not unreasonable, it's just you can do much better with some effort. And as you can see from the repair list, mileage don't matter, maintenence does.

^yeah. all that jazz. if they took it in on trade, I'm sure they threw a lot of what is on that list at the PO. which drove their assessment/PP WAY down. they've most likely got back of $3500 in it and are looking to make a killing mainly due to one owner and low mileage, both of which are hot buttons for car buyers in general, let alone the B5 S4 community.

you'd need to slap them in the face with a realistic offer and be blunt. a 16 year old 2.7 doesn't appeal to the mass car buyer market. someone looking to buy that car is most likely an enthusiast and crazy enough to take on rebuilding, or, some dude with a small bank account, but an appetite for a luxury badge like Audi. how many people are coming through the door to pay $9k for a stock S4 with a laundry list of maintenance? probably only you. they need to come down $3500 or more, or I'd absolutely pass. the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

i agree with everything that everyone is saying. 8800 is way too much for this car with this many issues. even if i do the labor myself, its 5000 in parts. i would never pay 8800 for this car.

but answer this, who among you bought your first s4 with no problems? who among you bought an s4 that didn't need control arms and valve cover gaskets? who among you went into your s4 knowing you would have to rebuild it but didn't care because you love the platform and the potential?

what i'm asking for is an objective look at this particular car. i see so many people who post an thread saying "look what i bought! it needs some work but i love it!" and people congratulate them on the purchase and cheer them on as they rebuild it. but in the threads where people buy a car like this, there is never a soul who says you should have done this this and this or i would never have bought this car because of this this and this.

i'm not trolling. i'm not looking to pick a fight on the nature of these cars in general. i'm asking for help. some have given it. some have laughed. i'm asking for an honest assessment which could include a price you would realistically pay for this particular car or alternative repairs to what a shop would charge an arm and a leg for.

you haven't been given an objective opinion? sure you have. everyone is telling you a stage 3 S4, or at least better maintained one, would be around an 8-9k price point. stock with your issues, there are two mentions above that you should be near 5K or back for the car you're looking at.

you said on your original post, should I buy this car? at $8800? no way. there are better options for that price. even your build price in parts will be higher than what's listed. once you get the engine out, things break from old age and you find other parts that are simply worn and need replacement. matter of fact your original build sheet lists only one turbo replacement, but replacing both at the same time is HIGHLY recommended for many reasons. . if you can get them down to about 60% of their asking, sure. then the DIY work is worth. I don't think anyone said you should find an S4 that has no issues or maintenance to do. it comes with the car. as an example, Ive dropped $3000 easily in just miscellaneous maintainence parts alone to get the car back up to par. BUT, I bought mine at a fraction of the cost that you are. you can disregard everyone's opinion if you like. it's your money man. we're just giving our opinions to you.

Got mine from a shady dealer for $8k.

More miles but it was clean, bone stock, needed nothing, and had dealer documented records all the way to new. These records verified money pit status and a wealthy owner who bought every recommended service.

$8k for a stock S4 better not need a penny on repairs.

Wow looking at those parts prices made my brain hurt, buy it for 4k, buy good used or solid deals on new items to fix. VCG aren't expensive, oem axle from a partout or raxle, all control arm kits shit the bed so get the cheapest one that people say to buy, cruise control stalk is like $30-50 used, cats- fuck those things you don't need em lol, EGT's code them out, used borg warner turbos $1k. Then $4-6k for the stage 3 build you just jumped into ....... yeah either buy this for cheap and go right to stage 3 or don't touch it. You can buy decent stage 2 cars for $5-7k without a blown turbo or a cheaper end build stage 3 for $6-8k. Good luck with your search

Here's constructive: That S4 is worth 3-4k tops. If it didn't have the mechanical issues it's a 5k machine. If it didn't have the mechanical AND cosmetic issues it's an 8k machine. What you've got there is nice little project driver. Fixing the mechanicals is going to realistically be 3k in parts alone if you source them correctly. Labor is another coupla k. Fixing the cosmetics is going to run you 5k at least. And that's if you do the sanding.

So should you pay 8.8 large for it? Probably not, but it's your money.

Dumped about $6k into my S4 since I bought it for $2200. I knew it needed work but not to the extent it does now. Had I known earlier, I would have just V8 swapped my A4 and been happy.

I have not looked at the ad, but if it's even more rusty than mine, dump it and get something else. I plan to get a full paint job done on the car come spring which will run me somewhere between 2.5-3.5k (I have connections in this part of the industry).

The car definitely seems to need some work but I think the PPI makes it appear a lot worse than it really is.

    For example...
    "Bad flex section"
PPI says: replace entire downpipe with new OEM part.
    Yeah, ok.

That's the correct dealer fix. Sure u can just weld in a flex pipe but then u own it. There's nothing wrong with the dealer properly replacing the part.

I'm assuming this is the car? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-S4-2-7T...m=131690417804

Being a large brand specific dealership, I'm shocked they're even trying to retail that thing, normally something that old would go straight to wholesale. Used car manager must be desperate or banking on the fact that it's a one owner with low mileage.

Love this line "This superb Audi is one of the most sought after used vehicles on the market because it NEVER lets owners down."
