I was filling up and couldn't find a pump that was used by someone needing 93 (have to do the math) and none we available. So as I was pumping I tried to figure out how much regular unleaded I was pumping into my car before the good stuff started flowing. Does anyone have an idea how much gas is in the line (single hose for all blends)?

I read that 1/3 gal left in the hose and then I read 2 gals and another site said 3 gals. So I thought that I would ask the smartest people and sometimes the smartest asses the question to have the correct answer once and for all.

OP, how do you figure out on what pump someone is using 93? Do you park your car and walk around to each to see what octane people are using, then pull in behind them?

I've never even considered this as something to do and still won't as it seems like an unneeded stress. Maybe if I was on a motorcycle that required premium fuel and had a small tank.

Even if the first gallon of 12 is 87 octane, your still getting 92.5 on average, and you'd need to go down to only 5 gallons to get below 92 octane. I don't think anyone will feel a difference between 92 and 93. And using one gallon in this calculation is probably really generous, with the true number being around 1/2 that.

Assume an internal hose diameter of 1/2 inch and a lenth of 96 inches.
3.14x0.25inx0.25in=0.2
0.2square inx 96in=19.2cubic inches which is .08gallons
So .08 gallons of crap in with your good stuff.
EDIT:
Assuming 3/4 inch internal hose diameter and a ten foot hose
3.14x0.375x0.375=0.442
0.442x120=53.04 which is 0.23gallons

It's gonna be less than 1/2 gallon, for sure.
