Is this a case of me wanting to be "superior" for no damn reason? For guys 30+ Y/O

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Id like to pick the brains of some members of my age which is 31 from some fellow members of the S5/A5 group.

I have been a owner of my 2010 S5 since August, absolutely love the car. GREAT middle ground between being a good DD, yet allowing me to still be a cool Dad . I have owned a good amount of fast cars in my day, a lot of V8's. Hell between 17-19 i went through 3 Foxbody 5.0 Mustangs with tons of bolt ons, fun cars! Also the infamous B5 S4. Prior to me and the fiance getting a S5 i drove a 2008 Hummer H3 for 5 years as a DD. Great little SUV, but slow as balls. I mostly got my "fun" from my 2001.5 S4 B5 that i used as a "spare" car. But honestly i felt after a while mostly young kids had these and i felt like it just didn't fit me other than driving it around town doing errands. So i moved on.

Fast forward to now, have had my 2010 S5 for about 5-6 months now. 355 HP in the 4.2L feels to be PLENTY to get me to point A-B. I am also blown away how many looks it gets and the amount of compliments i get on it & the car seems to just fit my age bracket well. You get A LOT of car for the money. I am getting ready to put a set of 20" wheels on as well as a AWE cat back exhaust on top of some other "visual" mods and boom i'll be done. No tune, no intake etc.

But here i am browsing Audizine lurking at the 3.0T face lift models . Now i don't need this to be a 4.2L vs tuned 3.0, i know the differences well and so does everyone else. The thing that actually pulls me in the MOST of the 2013+ S5's is the face lift front end and new lights. But in the back of my head i think man, with a tune and a pulley blah blah blah ill be over 400hp. But as i was driving home from the gym tonight, i thought as the LOVELY sound of the V8 purrs even with stock exhaust.... I DON"T EVEN DRIVE FAST ANYMORE . Hell i "BARELY" push the S5, i am like a old man, i am a cruiser, dare i say in my wild days a "safe driver". So i really ask myself in a year is it REALLY worth me trading or selling my S5 just to upgrade to the 3.0T and i don't even track, dragstrip nada lol. I really think its a middle age crisis of "wanting to be superior". Not to mention the cost to do the tune, roughly $1400, pulley/belt $600 yada yada.

IF ANYTHING the "LOOK" and the "TRIM" of the RS5 pulls me in the MOST! I get you can make the 3.0T faster, but the RS5 in stock form other than needing to be lowered a bit and some spacers is VISUAL sex. That is absolutely ALL i would need. Unfortunately, buying our house in the next year comes first, so the RS5 is a tad out of my price bracket to be comfortable. I wouldn't even change the stock rotor wheels on the RS5, car is perfect. If anything i should enjoy my S5 for a while, pocket that money id have to put down as another down payment for the 3.0T, along with the supporting tune mods and perhaps buy a 2013 RS5 in 2 years?

I am curious if anyone has gone through this, probably not, i am probably just crazy . I seriously often finding myself driving "slow" or normal just to see how much MPG i can get city driving to the gym each night. Got 17mpg tonight city . I would think a lot of guys who own the RS5 really don't care that you can make the 3.0T "faster" but enjoy the RS5 for what it is. Especially with the V8. Now don't get me wrong i WILL get spirited sometimes on the highway etc, but i doubt ever really to justify the 3.0T with a stage 2 tune etc.

Don't flame me, i just feel like i needed to ask someone. The fiance would NOT be the one to ask about this. She thinks im never satisfied

I won't comment on V8 vs 3.0T. But it doesn't really sound like you want to upgrade to the 3.0T. It sounds like you're happy where you are.

We are all going to be in the same boat soon with the new B9 S5 coming out. "Hey guys, the new turbo motor gets soooo much more horsepower from a tune than the old motors".

I vote keep what you have for now, and be proud of it. Maybe in the future look at where the prices are for the RS5, or check out the new B9 S5s.

Absolutely, no need to touch the 3.0 vs 4.2 we all know lol. The RS5 "to me" is the perfect combo. Its just a little more at the moment id like to put out. I like to live a little "under" my means. I seen all the few b9 models, well for the S4, mehh. Still brings me back to that RS5 in its 4.2L form. In a year or two i can see them coming RIGHT down to my price range. Not to mention id imagine they would hold their value QUITE well. Hell the b7 RS4 with 100k is still in the 20k plus rage!

So I know you asked for 30 Y/O+, but I figured I would weigh in. Seems like us "car guys" are always wanting more. As you mentioned above, having good priorities seems to be the key. Without tread jacking and giving my life story, I can say I understand where you're coming from. I'm currently driving a B7 and didn't end up in the B8 form by mistake. Audi just needs to quit making nicer and faster cars.

Sounds like you're wrestling with a similar dilemma to me though; when is the right time to upgrade?

I've always stood by this logic: If you stop turning around to check out your car every time after you've parked it, it's time to upgrade.

If you still get joy just for looking back at it, do you really need to spend the money for something else?

More than welcome to comment! I figured 29 and down were FAR more easier to lean towards the 3.0T because they are into the track and performance, which makes sense. The right time to upgrade is tricky. I read the thread in chatterbox on how often some guys upgrade. I was AMAZED to see how many guys changed cars often. But hey, you only live once. The longest car i have ever owned was my Hummer H3 for 5 years. Now here i am back to the upgrade bug, its just a matter of THERE ARE TOO MANY COOL AUDI'S! I still love the b6 RS4, but it will cost you to get a nice one.

Having not owned a v6 or v8 car, it's hard to say which I would prefer. But from observations, V8s sound amazing but forced induction is something to get excited about.

Yeah there are a handful of people who can change cars every year or so. Depending how you set up the financing, you can make it make sense. It's all a numbers game.

I thin all of the RS series are pretty stellar. I've been considering a B7 RS4, but I think I'm ready to move to another platform. Older cars have less tech and more headaches .

I do STILL look back it when i park it, AND once i install my 20" wheels and RS5 grill here should help keep that cruising. Only S5 i have in my area that i seen, get tons of compliments all the time which helps make that car payment worth it. When we bought it, i said we would keep the miles low, and of course take care of it as i do with all my cars i have ever owned. And than trade UP maybe in two years. I wonder what a 2013 RS5 will go for in 1.5-2 years once the new one comes out. Id guess around 40-45k.

Basically what i did, as far as setting myself up financing wise. Went with a nice 2010 with lower miles, but i had my Hummer H3 paid off so that gave me a nice chunk of a down payment when i traded it in. I stared at this white RS5 they had sitting there. But i had to stop myself lol. I kept telling the fiance, but look the wing pops up .

I mean if one really wants a zippy car you can buy a stage 3 S4 B5 now of days for 8k and it will make some serious power out of that 2.7 TT, not to mention its a timeless design. I just felt i had to move on from mine, wasn't doing it for me anymore. Wasn't a head turner like the S5 is for sure. And that's really what i am into at this stage in my life a quick looker car that turns heads and sounds nice. After all i'm only making trips to the grocery store and the gym

Yeah. I like a balance though. Sounds like you do too. Newer cars and power.

I'm looking at a manual '13 S4 for my next ride.

B8.5 S4's are sweet rides as well. ESPECIALLY when they are fitted with some 19" wheels and a nice set of H&R springs.

And e-codes and an RS4 grill

I was actually looking at a B8.5 S5 at first, but couldn't really justify the price difference over the S4.

Actually, you know what geared me toward the B8.5 over the B8 when thinking about what I want to get next? Not the 3.0T vs 4.2 comparison. Those darn new headlights. I just love the way the fit the body.

This is one of the cheapest RS5's i have seen close to me. Not that high miles wise, Just think i could sell the roof rack to get some money back LMAO But its not the "correct" form, id prefer the black front grill and black window trim with the black optic package. I seen one for 59k with 12k miles.

    THIS is the correct form

Yes i am in between the OEM 20x9 RS5 Titanium rotors or a set of AG 580 20x10 for my S5. As well as ordering my RS5 grille this month. Just think if i had a RS5, i wouldn't need to spend $2,500 on wheels and tires & money for the grille. -insert sarcasm-

Depends if you want a sportier looking car (OEM 20x9 RS5 Titanium rotors) or a "clean" looking car (AG 580 20x10).
Also, the ti wheels look OEM+ where the AG wheels are going to stand out as aftermarket.

Plus what goes better with the theme of your car? and how do YOU see it?

This coming from the guy who has a set of aftermarket 18" ti rotor wheels on his car.

The 580's are aggressive but "clean". But i am more of a OEM+ guy. I feel the RS5 rotors fit the S5/A5 PERFECT. But stuck between which one, nothing like "BRAND NEW" out of the box making them yours. Like i said if i had a RS5 i would never take off the stock wheels i love them. Wouldn't really change anything other than throwing some H&R OE springs to lower it a bit & a cat back exhaust. But you will pay a good amount to get OEM RS5 wheels in 20" form. Easily 2k used.

Lol I have rotors (R19) now on my summer set, but there's a set of AG 580 20x10 waiting in my garage to go on once spring hits :)

I wanted a new car, so automatically ended up with the B8.5.

Now as for the S4 vs S5 debate, that is a whole different ballgame. If you need 4 doors, easy choice. But if there is no need for that, the looks of the S5 blow the S4 out of the water.

What color 580 did you end up going with for the 580's? I see you have a Estoril Blue, I have a Deep Sea Blue Pearl and was checking out some custom finishes other than the satin silver. Also how are those H&R OE springs treating ya? Mine should be going on sometime within the next few weeks.

HAHA! I absolutely love the seats in my S5, really one of my favorite parts of the car. I noticed in the newer S3' & the B9 S4's they changed the seats and they don't look nearly as good as least from pictures. They have the traditional headrest which can be raised, BOO! I think i just need to be patient and do what my heart wants. Once we get the house settled in about 1-2 years ill start sourcing out a RS5. By than the newer turbo model should be out since it seems they want to compete with BMW, along with V8's being phased out by regulations for better mpg blah blah blah. And by than the market should come down on the V8 model. Timeless design for SURE.

I'm with James, 45 here and a car nut with an addiction.. The addiction of hunting for another car every 2 years, lol.
Forget about the 3.0 vs. 4.2 argument. It sounds like you have many curiosities about the next best thing for a marginal increase in spend. I'd say, spend your money on that house you want and stay with your current ride. It's a great looking car, and seems to make you happy.
Find the house with a great garage and work space. That should be #1. That will dictate the spend on your next trade.
I had a 2011 3.0t S5 cabriolet, and started my mod list with, an AWE exhaust, EC sway bars, and a stage 1 tune and thought I would be done there. I was never done, kept going with wheels, stage2 tune, grill, Coilovers, etc etc.. And then like you, got the itch after 2 years and traded for an RS5. Now, I have no regrets but I spent ALOT of money on all my mods and never recovered that.

Just my 2c, get the house keep your awesome car. Enjoy.

Seems the logical thing to do by far. For instance my last S4 B5 i sold, i never came close to recovering all the money i put into it performance and make it cherry inside and out. Bothered me for a while, since it was a older car and i should have known better if i wasn't going to keep it for many years. Live and learn. And i agree 100% with your post, thanks for the insight.

was in same boat. wanted to buy r8. but priorities hit. buying house later this year, and spending money on upgrades to keep me interested in my current car for a while. pre fl is here to stay.

what you can do is do an rs5 conversion if you don't care about the interior bits or speed. you can do a front end with FL tails, or even add the auto trunk spoiler.

    I have access to many rs5's in the area here, so it fulfills my need of wanting one (;

Based on what I've read & seen here, you can mod a 2010 S5 to look (including FL front & rear) & sound very much like the RS that appeals to you. And do so for far less than a used RS.

If it were my S5 (I'm 45 and my 5 is the nicest car I've owned), I'd do some mods and squirrel away a serious rainy day fund (already have a year's worth of mortgage payments?) for the new house. Double that, if you have kids.

Disregard all I've said if you can pay cash for everything ;-)

Since I hear Dad, Fiancée and House in your post, I'd honestly keep (and enjoy) your S5 till you feel comfortable upgrading. Perhaps by then the B9 RS5 will be out. Those are some big priorities and unless you have loads of cash laying around, I'm not too sure upgrading now is a good idea.

And like Chris said, you will always want MOaR!

I'm in your age range .. i have a Tuned 3.0T S5 with all the visual effects .. the car is effortless on the highway and the manual transmission is the best i have ever driven.. fun car.. i do have to say after watching a few v8 S5 aftermarket exhaust video's i am a little jealous .. in my household we have a Pre-FL and FL 5's .. at first i was in love with the Pre-FL but after every manufacturer starting copying the LED design and you can hardly tell what is an Audi anymore then FL design started to grow on me more and more and i love it for its unique and aggressive LED design .. oh yeah also i have 2 kids.. 8 and 1

You guys are right, you will ALWAYS WANT MORE! If anything i would rather stack for a rainy day and get my 4.2L RS5 in the future. As of NOW, that is the car for me. Even a 3.0T S5 will still be "middle ground" to me. Like i said i realize you can make it faster, but im not all about speed. I am about the look/finish and total package at this stage in my life.

I forgot to even mention i went through the motorcycle phase last year. I have owned a few sport bikes in my day, had my first GSXR 600 BRAND NEW at the age of 19. Somehow i convinced myself last year i needed to get a Kawasaki ZX-10R 1000cc, god knows where i came up with this lol. There was a older guy selling it for cheap with low miles. Told the fiance i could easily buy it and ride it a bit and probably get my money back after a year or two. After i had it for two seasons or riding, BY MYSELF all the time i realized how unnecessary it was. I ended up selling it for exactly what i paid for it even after putting 2,000 miles on it. GAWD, was that bike wicked fast. But i much prefer sitting my butt in a car cruising not being bothered by the local kids with Honda civics thinking they are going to keep pace with a 10 sec bike .

Funny you mention other manufactures copying the LED light design. I was JUST talking to my fiance in the car about this the other day. I REALLY love the taillights on the PRE-FL OVER the newer b8.5, its a very distinct design you really never see on the road. Now as for the b8.5 front including headlights and bumper design i do sprefer that to the Pre-FL as its more aggressive and flows with the body better i think, cant win haha.

I am sure that would eventually change owning a b8.5, but that is one thing i really love about the b8 models, at least those with the LED tails, i know the 08, 09 some didn't come with those LED versions.

Side note i can't believe how well these hold their value, the b7 RS4. Seem one the other day while driving, slick RS style car! Good new's for RS5 owners & their cars value holding well. I think any B8 holds its value pretty well when taken care of, AWD makes them great DD's i think. Having a garage queen is pointless. I would stride to drive the RS5 as much as i could, without putting too many miles on it
IMO. I guess its also how you like to spend your money. You could buy a 4 door b8 3.0T for those prices and make it FASTER, not to mention a nicer interior and newer technology all around. But it wouldn't be a RS4, and when i see one the other day i was like sweet!

Went from a B7 S4 V8 to an 2014 V6 S5 to a 2014 RS 5. The RS5 is on another level with performance and the sound the car makes.

As well as the package you get, its a stunning car that will be a timeless design MANY MANY year's from now i believe.

Tell me about it on those RS4's. Talk about holding value with 100k miles. Dang!

I am with ya man, i can't believe i got what i paid for mine after i put 2,000 miles on it selling it almost two years later. Was such a beautiful bike though. One of the lightest 1000cc's ever made, almost had the weight of a 600cc had such a short wheelbase VERY dangerous lol if not experienced on a litre bike. So if you want to be technical ANYTHING is going to feel slower or slower coming from that haha.

34 over here. Traded in my 4.5 year old 2010 S4 for a 2015 RS5 exactly 1 year ago. Main motivation was the look of the RS5 and after a year I'm still loving it. I had never modded a car before but felt like the RS5 was so close to perfect stock, that it was shame not to take it just a little further so I added coilovers, e-codes and some wheels.

    good luck with your decision.

Absolutely, I feel the RS5 is perfect from the factory down the to wheels. Other than needing to be lowered a tad, which changing the springs I've read improves the daily ride from the stock ones. So that's why I was saying upgrading to the 3.0T will probably be a stop gap still leaving me to want the RS. Midas we'll wait another 2 years, patience is a virtue. :)

I too love the V8 S5..... but after exhaust, tune and cai there is no way to get more power except spending 20k on a supercharger. I will keep it for a while tho, after lowering and putting on new wheels these are beautiful cars. I'm 48 and can't get rid of that need for speed.
