Unitronic Downpipe install and JB-1 impressions & Review

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Installed unitronic catted Down-Pipe this weekend and I want to give you my opinion of install and performance,

#1- The Unitronic catted downpipe is a very quality piece w/leak free v-band connections. (The main reason why I wanted to go with this). I ended up finding a unit with 1000 miles on it that I could not pass up the price approx. 1/2 the cost new due to the fact the OP wanted a quick sale needed for his new BT kit on his 2016R.

#2- Installation - Mad props to AMS Motorwerks in Linden NJ, Diogo is awesome and always brutally honest. The install did not go well in the beginning, there was a fitment issue to the OEM downpipe bracket. I am going to street follow the instructions exactly! The worst offender in the OEM DP bracket, you must loosen the bracket completely and align with the with aftermarket DP. Once that was done installation went much easier.

#3- Review of downpipe - Sound is much more improved. Note: that I already have the resonator delete done, cold start sounds pretty mean and you can hear the turbo spinning sound through the exhaust. Mid-Top end pulls much harder and I adjusted the JB1 reducing the boost a little down low for launches to save the DSG clutches. The Turbo breathes much easier and onset in linear and strong building to redline.

It does get loud when ur deep into the throttle and in the power band and the DSG fart sounds like an explosion LOL. There is a little drone at highway speed, but not that deep annoying rattle drone, more like a hum.

#4 - CEL - You will get one, mine came on around 20-30 miles of use. I then constructed a O2 spacer for $5 from a sparkplug non-fouler kit. I vag-commed the car reset it and have been CEL free since then (knock on wood). I ordered a vibrant adjustable jet version due in this week, but non-fouler does work. Keep in mind it is a PIA to modify the fouler as out )2 sensors are fatter than most and requires 1/2 bore our and then a tapering with the dremel. That took about 2-hours to do, I will give it to anyone that wants one once my Vibrant comes in.

I think this was a good upgrade and after warranty is out a tune it will be the ECU/TCU tune from Unitronic. Thus far very satisfied.

Welome to the super loud DSG farting club. lol. It gets worse in stop and go when there is a prolonged build up before upshifting.
I plugged some holes in the trunk to quiet down the sound getting into the cabin.
Recommend disabling soundaktor if not done already.

The soundaktor change is easy. The wink change requires a bit more work. All the coding is in the vcds thread.

Did you turn down the boost a bit from past Audi experience?

I've looked around a bit regarding the torque limitations of the DQ250. On another forum, I found a lengthy post that stated the limits of the S3/TTS DQ250 was 500 Nm / 368 ft lbs. Unitronic states on their site that their stage 2 mapping is 368 ft lbs. I've gotta believe that is not coincidence and they are hitting the maximum allowable rating of the factory hardware. But being new to VAG cars, I'm not sure.

Out of curiosity why not just flash Unitronic via UniConnect+ and just flash back to stock instead as you mention you are waiting for warranty. I know you have a 2016 but files should be out fairly soon. There is no difference in warranty risk running any of these devices. All remove liability of warranty in their terms and conditions and TD1 only occurs when taking flashed ECUs in. All of our cars here are flashed with no problems.

If you are using the Uniconnect, and mid-stream of the flash you lose connection, or the computer freezes, etc...how does Uniconnect recover the ECU?

lmfao- that was a made up lie from APR. they tried to sell everyone on the idea that it wasnt there crappy APR software causing the hundreds on issues of bricked TCU's.

there have been 0 cases of bricked unitronic ecus OR TCU's and they are flashed daily by regular people (not professional tuners)

There are ways for Unitronic to recover it. Plenty of people do it no problem. Have yet to have any of our customers or ourselves have any issues. Just flashed our mk7 this morning up to stage 2+

I don't know anything about APR, nor do I care. But I do lurk this forum enough to know your agenda against APR is obsessive.

I have seen flash tuners brick ECUs with my own eyes. In one case, I was operating the flash tuner product as it bricked a friend's RX-8. Previous to that event I had used that tuning suite more than 100 times on his and other cars with zero issues. The end result was the ECU could not be recovered and we had to get a new one. That flash tuner was great to deal with, and within 48 hrs had the new factory ECU at our doorstep to get the car running again.

How did you plug up the trunk? I was thinking about getting some truck bed spray and basically spray the whole trunk area after removing the felt covers. Was also looking at the foil backed stuff from a stereo shop. I have USP Catted DP with AWE Touring Exhaust and love the sound, but wouldn't mind it quieter in the cabin.

I used heat rated bubble wrap that is used to insulate and quiet down hot water heaters etc. I basically used tie wraps and gorilla tape to secure it. I also lined the spare wheel well with the stuff. Not very elegant by any means, but effective and nobody will see it since it's in the trunk.

The sound deadening stuff for audio didn't work for most people, it's also expensive and heavy. If you read thru this thread below, you will see what materials gave the best results.

After plugging the holes, you can hear a big difference in the exhaust with windows up or down. This is a short clip from my s3.

I believe there is a setting in the JB1 that allows it to not trigger the CE light. Look into it.

I don't see how it is not connected to the ECU
