    Low Oil Pressure

I apologize in advance if this topic has arisen before, but I was unable to find one for the B8 so here I go.

Last night I was driving and the "Low oil pressure- shut engine off" light came on. Given that I was only a mile or so from home, I decided to keep driving until I could park it in my garage. My question is, does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? It's a 2012 with 75k km and Revo stage 2. My mechanic thinks it's the dual stage oil control valve but regardless it seems like I'll need it towed. It was, and I assume is, running file apart from the warning light.

Any tips would be appreciated? perhaps sensor failure?

    Thanks

I had the same issue. It was the PCV diaphragm which was covered under a recall. The car drove fine in the meantime. Hope this info helps:

I had a similar issue come up and I ended up not having enough oil in the engine. The digital read out in the ami wasn't giving me an accurate reading. Ended up getting an oil change in the process and a manual dipstick. No issue since then, about 1-2 months ago.

ahh this I was unaware of. does pcv affect oil pressure? and would I be able to get this replaced even though I have a tune?

I also had this issue, except mine was from the oil pressure sensor failure. The sensor is screwed in under oil filter housing, is a quick, simple and inexpensive part to change, because it is available at most parts stores. Just make sure the body of the sensors are the same color, different colors are for different pressure ranges. Then at least you've done the easiest one first, and a manual dip stick is the next possibility.
There was another thread where the poor guy has been chasing low oil pressure for months. Good Luck.

    Low Oil Pressure

for you guys that had this issue, was the warning signal persistent? as in, did it show up as soon as ur start up, and stay on?

You can check to see if the oil fill cap can be removed at idle. It should have some suction. If the PCV is allowing too much vacuum then you will have a very difficult time removing the cap and the car will likely stall once removed. Seems crankcase vacuum can go so high it fights the oil pump.

thanks for the replies. the car still starts (sounds) fine, I'm going to drive it the 30km or so to my mechanic and get it looked at. hopefully catastrophic engine damage does not happen during that 30km

If its a defective PCV unit, which will cause excessive vacuum in the crankcase, which can result in the rear main crankshaft seal to be pull off its mounting plate, causing an oil leak and a $1500 repair to remove the transmission to replace a $40 seal.

how much vacuum is considered normal? I just tried to remove oil cap while idling and there's some degree of vacuum, like a household vacuum cleaner level, with some whistling sound, but it wasn't hard to remove the cap

That sound fairly normal for vacuum suction. It is really difficult to remove with a faulty PCV. Luckily as long as you have oil its fairly hard to have no oil pressure. The pump is a set of gears that is driven by a chain. So unless the oil pickup is blocked or clogged it should provide oil. It's best diagnosed by removing the oil pressure sensor and have a gauge installed to give an actual reading. It's worth looking over the wire harness as well. The F22 oil sensor is normally an open switch. Oil pressure closes the switch and provides a ground signal. If oil leaks back into the switch, or the wire gets damaged it will display no oil pressuse.
But you have roll the dice and put your motor at risk by ignoring a major fault indication.
